Hey guys! I have a nice idea, this has probably been suggested before. Basically, underground, you can find abandoned mines. Its more common then dungeons, but not by much. There could be torches that have burned out and old skeletons of long dead miners (Goblin miners? I like to feel like I'm the only human in minecraft, like that lonely feel you get) and the possibility of cave-ins since the mine is at least a hundred years old... Maybe even ghosts? But the ghosts don't attack you they just stare at you and float down a dark mineshaft with glowing red eyes but they will attack you if you attack them, they take peeks at you round corners to freak you out. And creepy noises like the cave noises! Like echoes coming from something deep in the mine or something... There could be wooden beams to make it look more like a mine and not a cave, there could be beds and a entrance to the surface? Chests scattered around the mine filled with ores and used tools. There won't be many ores found on the walls because the miners that were there before already mined out all the resources. Some areas of the mine can be flooded with water or maybe lava...? Some areas are underwater due to the water. There will be burned out torches that you can relight with flint and steel (these torches will look different from regular torches and will be brighter and better so there's actually a point to relighting them, but you can't make them so there's a limited amount of them, you can collect these torches too) You may also find books telling stories of the miners that built the mine and what happened to them, like diaries. There can be a old mine cart system but some parts may be broken. Maybe even bats that attack you. Mobs will be able to spawn in these old mines.
Reintroduce herobrine for real. I know Notch said he won't add it, but herobrine was really scary! This is a very good idea, has a good purpose. The red eyes thing, why not white?

Chickens are spawning in my house! Help! PLEASE!
Your house has been compromised therefore you must blow it to hell.
I think the ghosts and things like that would be absolutely terrifying. I don't know if those would be implemented, but there are alot of ideas that you mentioned that are very good. With the adventure update coming up, it sounds like something that would fit in.
Yes and meh.
Whilst the suggestions do sound good, keep in mind that some younger kids do play this game. Ambience is only adding a very small feeling of fear into it, but ghosts, deceased miners, more frequent, intense ambience is a bit much.
I'm feeling very meh about abandoned mines as, yes, you are still the only living human, but this still interferes with the theme.
I don't think diaries would play out well. This makes it feel less of a sandbox game and more pre-set. Maybe a map, maybe a mod, maybe both, but I'm not sure about this as an actual feature in vanilla Minecraft.
