In the past, Notch has made plenty of references to Hardcore mode. He said that he will definitely implement a mode that deletes the world upon death. However, he has expressed some confusion as to how this could work in multiplayer. He suggested that the death of a player causes a ban, but I think that is a bit too much. I propose a different way of hardcore mode, that makes death still very costly, yet gives players another chance to enjoy the world with their friends and still be able to play.
A hardcore server would be like any other server, except upon death, the player does not "die" in the conventional respawn way. Upon death, the player drops all their items and is converted into a "ghost". A ghost cannot be seen by other players. Ghosts cannot interact with the world in any way except for moving around it. Mobs do not see ghosts and do not interact with them. Ghosts cannot pick up or use items. Ghosts cannot even chat. So, once you become a ghost, you can only walk around, an empty husk of who you once were.
However, what if you really liked that world, and you want a second chance at life? Then you better have some friends who love you very, very much, because resurrecting a ghost is expensive. Remember the old Hmod plugin, where you could make shrines to Herobrine and summon him? These would work in a similar way, possibly with the same blocks: four gold surrounding a mossy cobble block, with Netherrack on top, one redstone torch on the top of each gold block. Here's where I have two ideas for how a spirit should come back:
Option 1: A sign must be placed on top of the Netherrack, and the ghost's username spelled out correctly. The sign is then lit on fire, and the server checks to see if that player is online. If they are, they are immediately teleported to the top of the shrine, transformed into a human being. The shrine is completely destroyed in the process.
Option 2: This one seems more realistic to me. Once the shrine is created, the Netherrack is lit on fire and the shrine becomes a functional unit. It is left there for a ghost to find - hopefully the one you want to find it. When a ghost player hops on top of the shrine, the shrine is destroyed and that player is transformed back into a human, all ten hearts restored.
Anyways, please feel free to criticize this idea, and thanks for reading!
i realy like the idea, but mabye the server host could have the option to have them just die and be a ghost or die and come back and anything that they made is destroyed
I like the idea of the "ghost" thing, but there are a few problems that arise:
1.) What if someone kills themselves and goes to an enemy fort or follows someone to their base? They just get their friend to revive them afterwards, or tell them in real life, and they have the coordinates, layout, and contents of the enemy base.
2.) What if the ghost is standing where someone is trying to place blocks? Will the ghost be inside of the blocks? People could annoy other players to no end by blocking their building sites.
3.) what if the ghost walks into stuff? Can they push it around? This would cause problems similar to the ones in point #2. I suggest making ghosts go through other entities.
What I would prefer is an automatic temporary ban, which lasts for a certain amount of time, set in the server.properties file.

Medieval builder and texture artists. Also totally awesome.

I see this as actually a pro of the ghost state. It makes sense that a person could aid their friends after death, to say it in a kind of corny, spooky way. However, coordinates would be too easy. Maybe make ghosts have disabled F3.

I imagine it like this. The ghost cannot walk into blocks, but if it is trapped inside of them it can walk out. Picture suffocation without suffocation actually happening. If gravel falls on you, you can walk out, but can't walk back in once you exit the entity. That said, players could build over the ghost however much they wanted, and the ghost would have no effect on them or their building.

Though I am tempted to say they should be able to push stuff around, because it would be fun to scare the crap out of people, I'd have to agree with you there. Other entities would completely ignore ghosts, that includes walking through or near them. Being a ghost should not have too many benefits. It should be something to be avoided, not "Yay! I'm a ghost!" but "Crap, I died, I'm a ghost now".
What I would prefer is an automatic temporary ban, which lasts for a certain amount of time, set in the server.properties file.
The only thing I don't like about the ban is it doesn't really fit in. Obviously, when you die you die, but the reason I made this idea was to propose an idea that restricted the player after death, but still allowed them to get some fun out of it, even though it seemed as though they were virtually not there (i.e. dead) to everyone else playing - and yet, if they were wanted by others, then they could be brought back.
Thanks again for the feedback, negative and positive!
