I'm not sure about other continents, but in the Americas, the native Americans of eastern North America used flint (sometimes called chert; it depends on additional substances present with flint, changing it's color slightly, but maintaining distinct flint properties) in tools (including weapons). In areas where volcanic activity is present (much of western North and South America), natives used obsidian in their tools (still includes weapons). In each respective region, either flint or obsidian is abundant. As an explanation: geological properties in the west resulted in the creation of obsidian; the east has different properties, so obsidian is not naturally occurring, and flint proved to be the most viable option.
Either way, the tools are effective; flint and obsidian are equal in effectiveness. They both produce sparks when stricken on steel, the only difference is that obsidian breaks down slightly quicker (obsidian was very abundant, so the difference is made up)
-----------------------
Now, to make Minecraft more realistic:
Obsidian should have the property of being able to be used as arrowheads (or any other weapon that might use flint)
Obsidian should be able to be used in the production of fire (maybe 'obsidian and steel')
-----------------------
You may contact me on the forums, but I will reply quicker if i am contacted on Twitter @OdinThorhammer
I have strong feelings for this, please help make the properties of Minecraft more realistic.
**As a sidenote: obsidian is a glass; for details, refer to The US Geological Survey
----------------------
This is a picture of obsidian
My only reason for suggesting this as a firemaking tool is for realistic purposes...not that I would prefer it.
You have to keep in mind that the obsidian in the game and the obsidian we know are nothing alike. Obsidian in reality has the hardness of glass. Obsidian in the game requires a diamond pick, and has a blast resistance second only to bedrock. They are obviously not the same substance (id est, there is very little realism to the properties of obsidian now); thus I do not see any reason to treat obsidian as if it was real obsidian in crafting, especially if it is "for purposes of realism".

And yes...you should be able to detonate TNT with it
An idea is making the fire larger , but that will have problems , like burning yourself everytime you want to put in fire a pig.
Any way , i am not sure if support or troll , so i will go 1/2

Sorry, new to these terms, could you please explain this sentence:
"Any way , i am not sure if support or troll , so i will go 1/2"
Oh yea, and this:
"...put in fire a pig."
