I think that sneak (shift) should hold you in water, floating, and avoiding most water resistance (such as a waterfall) while you move forward (albeit, slowly).
I can currently think of the following uses:
Underwater construction
Getting back up water pathways if you fall accidentially
Keeping you from bobbing up and down while you're swimming
Also, and I'm not sure many have this problem, I myself am trying to bail out a flooded glass room. I screwed up and now I need to get rid of a bit of left-over dirt and cobblestone I placed. This feature could allow me to mine the blocks much faster without moving around a lot. :mellow.gif:
mabye not...i use sneak in water to hide in pvp servers.
Maybe it holds you at whatever level you are still on. So you can tread water on the surface or you can tread water slightly below the surface but not walking on the sea floor.
