Minecraft is a great. I think we can all agree on that. But there comes a point for adventurer when their house is impenetrable, and not even the Nether is a challenge to survive in. Blight Storms are my answer to this. They are like zombie siege or Blood Moons in Terraria, yet unlike in Terraria, they won't come to new players. They require a Nether Portal to happen, so chances are, if a player has a nether portal they'd be able to take on zombies breaking through doors. And perhaps the more diamond a player has, the hard it'll be to survive, so there'll be a little adaptive difficulty involved.
Knowing when a Blight Storm starts
When a blight storm is about to start this message will pop up on the player's screen:
"A Blight Storm is emerging from your Nether Portal! Be ready!"
Also an unusual amount of zombies and Ghasts in the sky could also be a sign.
Effects of a Blight Storm
While there is a Blight Storm, Zombies can open doors and trapdoors (They can open iron doors, it'll just take longer). Also, mobs will spawn a lot more, perticularly around you and the portal the blight storm emerged from. Ghasts will also spawn around the portal as well.
A Blight Storm will last all night.
Lore of a Blight Storm
Basically it's the blight of the nether, coming through your portal and into the real world.
I actually kind of like this; it adds another level of adventure to Minecraft. I like the idea of more hostiles spawning around, but there needs to be a reward for this somewhere. Otherwise it'd just be an inconvenience as the player digs a hole in the dirt and seals himself off for a few minutes. Perhaps different and more valuable mob drops during a blight storm?
I think what ought to happen is that, as a blight storm takes over, we get the normal spawning level of hostile monsters in the night, with the addition of Ghasts, surface Slimes, and a hell of a lot more Zombies. Maybe even more beyond that.

The nether needs to be updated so bad, not ****INGfreakin pistons or some "Adventure" update. I would love to see ur idea (maby a on or off switch) in a nether update, along with other ideas.

Well there'll be a lot more mobs and therefore, more drops, so that's sort of an award. Also it's really fun.
i sorta like the idea but i dont think it is fare... cuz it might be super hard to kill them.... and u have no place to run so its like deaath everywhere... i give the idea a 6 out of 10... its okay...

More of the same drops isn't nearly enough of a reward. Bones, arrows, and gunpowder are the only drops you need indefinite amounts of. Once I've got enough string for a bow and a fishing rod, I won't be needing anymore until my rod breaks. And feathers are useless if you can just farm arrows instead, but I'll give zombies the benefit of the doubt on this one, since they still need to get a real drop.

The idea isn't all that original, and your thoughts aren't entirely coherent, but I see some good potential with this; it's more well-thought out than some of the other ideas I've seen.
For one thing, I like the idea that you have to have a Nether portal already in order for this to happen. It means that the player has collected a good amount of materials and could deal with the Blight Storm (I think the name could use some changing; perhaps simply Nether Storm?) without dying instantly.
Secondly, I like that the game gives you a bit of a warning, though an actual message saying: "A Blight Storm is approaching!" is a bit un-Minecrafty and too much like Terraria (it's not that I don't like Terraria, I just don't think it would fit with Minecraft). I think a different kind of warning sign - some red coulds forming overhead, some lightning with no rain - could help add to the "Oh, shi-" factor of the storm in addition to giving the player some warning as to what is to come.
Admittedly, stuff should come out of the Nether portal itself, but if you're like me and your portal is in a small 5x5 room you made to accomodate the portal? Methinks that it should simply be that Ghasts spawn in the sky and monsters are capable of spawning in higher light levels or something. There could even be a new Nether-specific mob that appears only during a Nether Storm, so that there's something unique to the event.
As for any kind of special reward for surviving it, I don't think there needs to be anything. After all, this is Survival Mode. Not everything needs some kind of special reward.
Not very original, but it has potential. :smile.gif:

This suggestion can fix that.
Neat idea, sort of. But unoriginal. Not a big fan.

Penalizing the player for the hard work and persistence needed to collect more than just a handful of diamonds? I don't think so.

Completely missing the point of the Nether as a fast means of travel with its own dangers separate from the Overworld? I really don't think so.
Yeah, there needs to be greater challenges, but this isn't it.
