Has anyone noticed that the visibility through water in Minecraft is exactly backwards from what it is in reality?
In the real world, when standing above water looking in, it is difficult to see very far into the water. When you actually get into the water, it becomes much easier to see things that are also under water with you.
In Minecraft, however, it's much easier to see into the water when you are not in it, and it becomes practically impossible to see much of anything that isn't right in front of your face once you're submerged.
Anyone else think this should be changed?
(I would like to build my underwater city and not be able to see much of it from the surface, but I'd also like to be able to see more of it underwater.)
That is true but why are you underwater anyways, theres nothing there but squid. By the turn but the brightness on your video card or monotor to kind of fix that.

I like to build underwater structures, and sometimes cities (i.e. Rapture). They provide the best defense against mobs, and are just plain cool.
Also, I think a lot more underwater content needs to be added, and water biomes themselves need to be deepened and expanded, so that there is more underwater room to build. But this is one fix that I think needs to happen no matter what, and seems like it might be less difficult than some of the others I'd like to see.
Yeah i have another house that is built in a lava lake man made lava lake... It was not easy building... I have another house with a lava moat and fire wall. But yeah water visibilty=yes
Yeah, maybe lava is the best possible defense, but that sounds like way too much work for me lol. Besides, I like water better anyway. :smile.gif:
Every block of water reduces the level of light that passes through it by 2; sunshine has a light level of 15, so you can see why it's so dark underwater in terms of game mechanics. But yeah, I'd definitely agree with you, especially if more underwater content is added. I'd be curious to see if it's possible for the light to be reduced every like two or three blocks, greatly increasing the depths at which you can still see while still leaving extreme depths in the dark. Fog should still probably be kept kind of high though, so even if there is light your visibility will still be reasonably limited.
