Picking up items is easy in Minecraft. Just walk near the item and it flies into your inventory.
But what if you don't want to pick up an item? What if it's something you don't want cluttering your inventory? Or if it belongs to someone else? Or if you're trying to transport it somewhere else by water or gravity and you don't want it stopping when it reaches you?
I suggest adding mittens. Those big bulky gloves that make it hard to pick up anything.
You wouldn't be able to wear mittens in your armor slots. Instead you'd have to place them in your toolbar. If mittens are anywhere in your toolbar (whether you have them selected or not) you would not pick up any items. To resume picking up items, simply move the mittens out of your toolbar back into your main inventory.
You'd still be able to mine, and place blocks, and do everything else while wearing mittens. The only thing they stop you from doing is picking up items.
Mittens should probably be easy to craft. Here's one good possible recipe that would only require two wool:
Simple to add and quite useful. Mittens for all!
P.S. No, mittens wouldn't protect you from the cold. Since there is no cold in Minecraft. The only temperature difference in the game is "on fire" or "not on fire".
lol. I find this funny, mittens make things harder to pick up so the mittens make you not pick things up. Where would we put it, I want to wear full armor when exploring.

It doesn't go in your armor slots. Instead you'd just place mittens anywhere in the 9 slots of your toolbar if you want to use them. So the only cost of wearing them is that you have one less item immediately accessible. It wouldn't prevent you from wearing full armor.
build a small trash can in your house with cactus or lava to dispose of unwanted cluter.
It's not really for garbage disposal. It's to avoid having to pick up things in the first place.
For example, let's say you're flattening out a dirt hill near your house. You don't want to bother collecting or storing this dirt. Currently, each time you break a dirt block you'll pick it up. You'd have to wander off and press q to toss the dirt away each time your inventory fills.
If you had mittens on though you could just wear them while you work. And you'd ignore all the dirt blocks falling around you rather than automatically retrieving them.

You can just ignore them anyways. Why would you need to toss away each one? Just wait until the end and then throw them in lava or a cactus.

There's really no need to throw them into lava or a cactus. That's for show more than anything else, since you can dispose of items just by throwing them on the ground and waiting for them to despawn.
But it is a hassle to have to toss dirt aside, whether into lava or just on the floor. For example, if you're digging a tunnel or an underground chamber. There's no reason to force people to pick up dirt/cobblestone/other common stuff they might not want.
Obviously mittens aren't necessary, since minecraft is fun now even without now. But why not add this as a optional hassle-saver? It shouldn't be too tricky to code.
This might help some people, but mittens? Really? I simple "don't pick up <x> item" option would do fine.
Yeah, mittens are a little silly. That's kind of deliberate. I think it matches the game's tone, we do have zombie pigmen after all. And despite being a bit silly, it still makes sense.
And I prefer controlling this in game, rather than pressing esc to edit an options menu. That would be breaking immersion a bit too much, at least to my own personal tastes.
This could also be useful when mining as a team. Let's say you want one guy to be the courier, continually ferrying cobblestone and ores to the storage chests. The other people stay and mine. With this, everyone but the courier could wear mittens so only they get items.
I like the idea. I have often felt like I needed something like mittens.
I probably wouldn't ever have them when I needed them though. It's not something I would view as essential for most missions and projects, so I'd probably leave them behind all the time. Although, if they could be made in a 2x2 recipe, with wool, that would be convenient, since I often have extra wool in my inventory. Could the recipe be:
