Now, before I begin let me state that this idea is unnescecary (I know I misspelled it), unimportant, unneeded, and [something similar] is wanted by over half of Minecraft's active population.
Now, I'm going to start with my idea for a new Mob. It would be called the Iron Statue. It would basically appear to be a human-like piece of Iron. Like animals require Grassy Dirt to spawn, the Iron Statue would have to spawn near Iron Ore. This makes it moderately easy to find, possible to farm, and overall makes sense. Now, the Iron Statue would be completely still when nothing is in range. If you approach it, its eyes turn red and it attacks you. It's your average Melee Mob, like the Zombie, except it would have more health and attack power because Iron is harder than skin.
Now, I'm going to state my currency idea. When the Iron Statue is killed, it drops zero to ten pieces or a new item called Iron Coins. That's it. Useless, uneeded items that have no use for crafting, building, or anything at all except role-playing currency.
Now, this is why I think this is a good idea. Obviously, it gives Minecraft multi-player servers something to use as currency. However, the way you obtain it is the biggest reason. You get it from a Mob that only spawns in certain areas. In other words, you have to hunt out the Mob and then fight it in order to obtain this currency.
Never! Anyone who's played Runescape knows that currencys ruin games. If you want a game where monsters drop money, go to the formerly great game of Runescape, now the world's most currupt and unfair RPG. The main problem with money is that it works well for a while, then it become the whole object of the game, and the rich get rarer and more powerful items to keep them playing, while the poor are cast out of the developement cycle. If currency is introduced, I will fight with all my ability to save the game from destruction. Please, don't ruin Minecraft.
Alright. Here's the problem with your argument. It's purely for role-playing reasons. It would be useless in single-player and multi-player in which they don't role-play. Unless you are role-playing, there is nothing to buy, ntohing to craft, and nothing to build with this.
There is already a semi-rare mob that drops an item that is completely 100% useless. Use slimeballs. Or maybe even lapis could do as money, but lets face it, even with your proposed "coins", if no one attches any value to them, they are worthless. Get your players to belive in something, and boom, it's money. If there is just coins and no one really gives a crap, then it isn't monwey, it's junk. Ideally money cannot be easily farmed as well, then it loses it's vlaue and moves mroe towards "junk"
