Instead of having us rely on Seeds to generate a suitable terrain, it would sure be nice to have maybe...five or six default 'landscapes' to choose from, and then a second option with which we can assign the chosen landscape a biome.
For instance...after clicking New World and we are taken to the screen with the seed generator, display two parallel sets of options. The list on the left could contain such items as Flat, Rolling, Default and Mountainous. The list on the right could have Grassland, Forest, Desert, Taiga, Default, etc.
Likely a convenience that'll never be implemented seeing as your plate is always full (and this isn't anything necessary, of course), but something to ponder nonetheless.
I think what we may likely see at some point, perhaps even before the full version release, is the ability to adjust at least the following attributes of a world:
- World Temperature
- World Moisture
- Terrain Volatility
Basically depends on how Notch decides to reintegrate Creative Mode into the final package.

Honestly, I'll take any terrain adjustment options that I can get at this point. I just really hate those darn mountains, and they are so plentiful. Of course, the game is still in Beta, so who knows what the maps are going to look like after being generated in the full game...but, oh well. Options are always nice.

Based on some comments Notch has made, I think it's likely you'll get them eventually. He's specifically mentioned shifting world maps from mode to mode, being able to design something in Creative in order to be used in Adventure (and, presumably, also Survival).
Given this, it stands to reason that we'd be afforded some measure of control over the generation of the environment.
And I know the temperature and moisture attributes are already in there, somewhere, because an SMP world I play in suffered a glitch that changed them.
As you probably already know, there are mods to do this. But, aside from that, I can see how people would deem this a useful little tool to have handy, especially when you're looking for a specific biome to place your house in.
Personally, I like to have the maximum amount of adventure and discovery I can possibly rake out, and knowing what biome I'm going to live in before I actually set foot in it...well, its something I can do without.
If this does find its way into the game, I would assume there'd be an option for a random seed...

Ah, but what if someone else had designed the world for you?

Yeah, I've seen a few mods pertaining to this topic. However, I'm a little skeptical about mods. Texture packs are one thing, but modifying the code within the game kinda worries me a little. On top of that, I have no idea how to implement them lol. It'd just be a nice little feature for people like me I suppose.
As for your adventures, there could always be 'Default' buttons in the Landscape and Biome generation options, on top of the seed generator, so people with the travel bug like yourself could still get your fix :tongue.gif: Even selecting, say... 'Flat, Taiga' could spawn you in a flat world and inside of a taiga biome, but just because we selected 'Taiga' doesn't mean the entire world has to be Taiga.
Maybe this calls for a third option (stretching our suggestive boundaries here o.o;) which could simply encompass two choices: 'Whole' and 'Default'. Whole could = the entire world being your selected biome, and Default could simply spawn you in a world of typical and diverse biomes in the biome you originally selected.
As for Hydro, your words give me some hope :tongue.gif: I guess I'll just have to be patient, as difficult as that is sometimes.
and what about having each map having 9 "submaps" onto generating?
for example, you have options like moisture, height, temperature, "flatness", and seed generation in one map called "center" this options will aply in the center of teh map where you spawn and more likely will live.
then we have another 8 options for cardinal points, with the same attributes, and this world generation inputs override the central inputs, once the player have ventured, lets say randomly from 40 to 80 chunks into that direction. this inputs could be dramatically changed, so you can ensure that if you choose a montanius wetland for your center, after travelling a whie to the north, you will eventually find almost an entire different world (let's say a flat desert).
if you don't want this changes simply keep all the fields with the same input :ohmy.gif:

...I think I understand what you're trying to say. And it sounds really complicated and difficult to employ within the game, at least after remembering how far along it is at this point. That's why I thought it might just be easiest to have the three options I listed above: Landscape, Biome and Whole or Default. Gotta remember that Notch has a lot on his plate right now, especially considering he's now working with a team to bring Minecraft to the Xbox 360 (I hope it outsells Fortresscraft >.>)
In short just move to a location that suits you and live there, no need to start in it.
Sometimes it's darn near impossible to find the biome we really want, that or it just takes a really long time. It's also difficult to locate the perfect spot to begin building without manually altering the land beforehand. Thus, terrain generation options would be pretty sweet. This is all simply in the name of convenience.
You don't like mods?! I may be biased because I am a modder myself, but just mosey over to the mods section of this forum, look through some topics, and just tell me none of them look interesting.
At least check out adventurecraft. It installs itself into a separate directory and doesn't touch ANY of your files. It has your idea already implemented: You choose new world, then you have different options where you can play with a bunch of different world gen settings. Playing the map that it comes with feels like playing Zelda:Minecraft Edition.
This is a bit off-topic, but if you ever need help installing mods, shoot me a PM and I'll help you out.

I share your enthusiasm lol.

We effectively already have that, I'd say.

Also this pretty much used to exist, but then they invented BIOMES.
