I think Minecraft should have a Irrigation System by using Lapis Lazuli. Basically, it'll be the exact same as redstone dust to make circuits. For me, I don't use wool or dyes, so the Lapis Lazuli I find actually might be useful.
You put the Lapis Lazuli on the ground, click a bucket of water on it, and you can now put water up stairs or down stairs.
Couldn't you just build an actual irrigation system?

I'd rather have craftable pipes imo. It makes more sense and could add some interesting gameplay elements.

I guess so, but this would only use one block, and it can go upstream.
You know, there are mods for pipes, water pumps, and such.
