In real life, sugar cane is a real pain in the butt to harvest. It's almost as tough as wood. I think it should take four or five hits with a fist to harvest it.
Also, you should be able to make sticks and "wooden" tools out of cane. And make it much more common in some biomes, as an alternative way to start the game. IRL there are entire economies based on the many uses of cane.

Why? Useless. You can get sticks aplenty already.
I'm basically saying to replace the trees in swamp biomes with cane. It would differentiate the swamp biome from all the rest.
