i have seen many suggestions about dreaming, some of them good. others... not so good. but one thing they all share is their consistency of having prerecorded scripted events happening or forcing you to dream when you actually just wanted to skip night time. Now last time i checked, minecraft was a SANDBOX game, that is to say that you can do whatever the hell you feel like doing.
most dream realm suggestions sound something like "you wake up on a bed, and a monster comes and you kill it and you solve puzzles and then you wake up with cool objects... derpa herpa" why not instead remain with minecrafts original concept of having a completely customizable world, now if you're an older gamer from the nineties then you might have heard of a game called LSD: dream emulator.
if you haven't heard of this game look at the video below to get a good idea about what it is. Otherwise you will not understand the rest of the suggestion. Due to the lack of videos concerning this game i had to choose this one. Sorry for wasting six minutes.
how would the dream realm look like?
Whenever you travel to the dream realm you would spawn in randomly generated terrain. The map generator would have to be modified to create terrain that simulates skyscrapers and city environments, castles, odd looking buildings, and any other weird and unnatural formation. Now when you enter your dream you will have all of your items, you can place them down. use them and do everything else that you could do in the normal game. you could also mine blocks around you and build any sort of structure. But!! whenever you stand next to glowing blocks your dream would change and become another dream with another map generated randomly. This would mimic real life dreaming where you are constantly shaping and changing the dream environment itself.
but what if i don't want to teleport to a different dream?
Then don't. Only glowing blocks can teleport you to a different dream. (that and dying) Whenever you come close to a glowing block the edges of your screen become misty, this mist will eventually over the course of ten seconds cover up your vision and a loading screen appears. This way its impossible for you to have "accidentally" changed the dream. the map generator then builds another random terrain and you begin again in a fresh dream. if you die in a dream then you would be teleported to a dream environment related to the way you died, if you fell in lava it would be a "nether" copy. drowning in water would take you to an island in a giant ocean. getting killed by fall damage takes you to the void (that is to say that you would fall infinitely until dying). mob deaths would take you a random trrain except it is swarming with the mob that killed you and so on. also, glowing blocks would appear randomly in dreams and are identifiable by there consistent glow that would alternate between different light levels.
but i only dream to pass the night time!!
Cool so do I. and it should stay that way. unless of course if there was a specific way of reaching this dream realm, a way that would include an obvious procedure that would take you to the dream realm, and i believe that this way would come in the form of *drum roll* a somnic stone, now what would a somnic stone do? when you put it in your inventory and use a bed it would take you to the dream realm. while you are in the dream realm it is impossible to leave your dream state in any way besides actually using the stone again, the way you use it is simply holding it in your hand and right-clicking at which point the dream becomes blurry and you wake up in your bed, with this process you don't have to go to the dream realm involuntarily and if you want to leave immediately you can do that as well. losing the stone in the dream wakes you up immediately as well.
What/who/why/where/when is a somnic stone?
A somnic stone is actually a crystal with the rarity of diamonds, when you find one you have to mine it with an iron or diamond pickaxe to collect it. It spawns only a few in your world and whenever you manage to mine one all other somnic stones in your map morph into regular stone, if you lose your stone then the somnic stones in your map revert back from normal stone and can be mined to get another somnic stone. they are also found as rare drops when you raid dungeons.
this photo is not mine but its my imagination of how the somnic stone would look like to be it would appear like a diamond but with more shades of blue that would differentiate it.
but wouldn't this take forever to generate new terrain for each dream?
No, because each dream would only be a limited size, of around five(debatable) chunks. That would allow the modified map generator to create various dream environments without huge amounts of lag or loading screens.
and what else would the dream realm have to offer?
It would also have a variety of events and minor scripted things that would make it a strange and exciting trip, you might find yourself attacked by flying pigs. a zombie might walk up to you and say hello, creepers might give you (non-explosive) hugs. random miners might come along, giant zombies might chase you, you might find rare minerals above ground. and several other events that would make the dream realm a dynamic and always refreshing experience.
optional idea (or not fully formed)
Corruption: the more you modify the dream world, the more corrupted it becomes, by corrupted i mean that more hostile mobs would spawn, blocks might randomly change textures, torches would turn off automatically, random void holes would appear, and just overall the longer and more you build in one dream it would become more nightmarish. Eventually to the point where your world would be cloaked in darkness and zombies would run rampant, any torches you place would seize to work after a few minutes, diamond blocks and iron blocks would slowly change to dirt and gravel and the dream would transition into a nightmare state where you live in fear.
guys, look into the nitemare realm by Keegan666 its already a work in progress
how do you define "work in progress" from what i've seen he is about as advanced in his work as i am in mine, besides his idea is a completely different concept, unless of course i skipped over a modder saying that he had volunteered to create his idea in which case i understand what you mean.
