I love redstone have seen some great things built with it and have even made a few neat things myself,
I love that we can build locks and logic gates, and I don't mind the excessive amount of resources that go into them.
but one thing that has stopped me from larger builds is the amount of space needed for even the simplest of parts.
I mean even a simple AND gate takes a 3x2x2 area.
they just get bigger from there,
I thought after the repeater we would see more redstone programming options,
but it doesn't seem to be coming.
here is my logic for how the blocks would work they would be a single block with multiple textures for its face
the out point would be faceing away from the user when placed,
the inputs could be on the sides of the block.
all gates have 2 inputs, they can be built with more but in the end they all really just have 2
this layout would allow you to run your input lines or switches and your output for your gates lots of different ways in a very tight space.
I wouldn't mind if the workbench had you do the blueprint in the same materials as now so you loose the same amount of stuff,
the only thing that makes using gates impractical for the average builder (not an engineer of hobbyist) is the fact that you have to house all this stuff in the most inconvenient amount of space.
Kinda makes redstone the magic box of minecraft, the same way PCs are the magic box of the real world, flashy and pretty but some might feel you need a PHD to build anything good, it's just intimidating and cumbersome.
if you had this, and the vertical redstone mod that I've seen floating around you could take those builds that took weeks and took up the space of a minecraft city and you could fit them in a large room and do it in hours,
you could spend more time playing with your creations and less time building them or build even grander things.
the main reason I suggest a new workbench is because of the amount of space needed to layout the gates proper and the present grid does not allow for orientation like top or side.
Well that is my rant for the day, sorry it's so long, hope the right people see this and feel it's worth the effort, IK it'll be a huge amount of work.
yes in a nutshell I want logic gates in a single block.
I don't feel doing it this way will hurt the balance of the game and will encourage even more people to build elaborate redstone creations.
and thanks for the suggestion I'll look into those mods to see if there along the lines of what I want, but I don't use mods all that much and would rather see this become a part of the game.
Yes MoareAI's mod is exactly what I was asking for , a little on the gray side for looks but very useful,
Still I hesitate to use it as a mod, I would rather see this as an addition to the game.
I'm not asking for them ALL in one block, I was asking for a workbench to build blocks of each on them so AND would be one and OR would be one and XOR and so on.
though I guess you could create a block that worked about like the note block and when taped it would change function.
I think that would be frustrating and hard to keep up with though.
that would work for the and gate maybe, but there are other gates also that require more work.
Here, I'll link to what I found for that suggested mod
it's the first 2
his idea does work without an extra workbench, but I would like to do the more complex peaces in one run.
that takes more than 3x3 it would probably take something like 9x5 at it's most complex.
I would be over the moon if MoareAl's mod became a part of the game.
yes it's more steps to make the more advanced blocks but I can live with that, they are tight and easy to use, very sweet.
What I'm getting from this is a block that you interact with similarly to a workbench; except instead of crafting items, you place redstone and torches etc. on the grid, so that logic gates that once took up a 3x3x2 space or whatever are now compressed into one.
Sounds good to me.

"Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say that there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe." -Frank Zappa
and I broke down and tried the suggested mod,
it has a little glitch when moving between vertical levels but it's dealt with by adding a line of redstone.
This is still a huge space saver, but once placed many of the blocks are hard to tell apart.
while I was at it I finally tried vertical rdstone,
out of the two this one is the bigger disappointment,
it's very quirky and will not allow you to put anything directly beside the redstone,
it's still useful but it needs real work
you wind up having to create a 4 block open space for each vertical peace and if you don't have that the line will not set, if you place anything after setting the redstone it breaks.
