have you ever wanted to build a giant stone castle, with all sorts of rooms and tricks and secrets and gadgets? it is a completely plausible idea, except the process in which to do it really isn't.
you still can though, if-
a. you have no life and can easily smelt that stone without the slightest bit of regret on the perfect, sunshiny saturday that is to come
b. you decide to go afk and do something else, risking the chance there might not be something else to do
But what if you don't want to do that? what if you just want to take a stand and say,"no! i want my stone now damn it!"
well, then thats just too bad. you will have to wait. forever. until that dumb stone is ready.
Now notch, trust me i understand. sometimes less is more; the simpler the better. but would it be too much to ask to add one or two new furnaces to the game, and maybe some new fuel sources, perhaps redstone or saplings?
here's my idea:
Brick Oven
B B B
B F B = crafting where B is Brick Block and F is for Furnace--runs on coal only
B B B = works 50% faster than normal Furnace
Geothermal Microwave
G G G
G B G = crafting where G is gold ingot B is brick oven and F is flint and steel--runs on redstone only
G F G = works at twice the speed of a normal furnace
anybody leave a comment if you want to expand upon the idea- i know the slow smelting furnaces of today are extremely slow and agrivating. lets work together and make notch know how we feel!

This is actually a really cool idea given that redstone is so highly abundant with relatively few uses in most worlds. (very few people spend the time to set up extremely complex and large redstone machines.
My personal approach to this problem is to create a somewhat large tree farm and then just make a room of furnaces (80+) keeping certain furnaces full of certain materials almost all the time. 10 full of wood to get charcoal, 10 full of stone, 10 full of sand, 10 full of clay, etc. I just clean out and refill each set of furnaces when i pass through that area of my house/castle/world-thingy.
It can be a bit tedious but the time really isn't an issue for me, i generally have a whole crapload of stone/glass/brick at any given time, especially if i plan to use any of those, i can put more effort into gathering the supplies.
Still, this idea seems solid as it would allow more uses for underused resources and would please a a lot of people not to mention reducing the need for an entire room dedicated to furnaces which can be cumbersome.

thank you for your input and i agree. but please take a moment to notice that you said you have 80+ furnaces, and 10 just to produce charcoal, and 10 just for brick???? i don't know if you are playing legit, but you either are or you aren't. now if you are not or you just gave yourself a "head start"; that explains that abundance of resources. if you are playing legit, then you must spend 75% of your day just gathering wood to make into charcoal and use the rest to operate the furnaces. :blink.gif:
now, im glad you have your own method of doing things, but your explanation was the entire point why this is needed in a patch. dude, 80 freaking furnaces! are you crazy! thats why this mod can be such a help- to free up time to do more things in minecraft :smile.gif:
but thank you for your support, and lets all work together to get this incorporated into minecraft :cool.gif:
I kinda like this. Then again I have the allocator mod so my Furnaces reload, refuel, and move the finished items into chests for me. But this would speed things up more. Someone is making a Mod so yay there. I might just get the Mod =D

um.... :unsure.gif: its not really a mod request, just a suggestion to be made into the actual game. if you want to make it a mod thats cool too, we could work on it together and do something with ad fly. i guess in the long run if we get the buzz going as a mod, then it will be put into the game by notch- like what happened with the wild grass mod :biggrin.gif:
I was thinking about this recently too. but was i was thinking is a larger furnace. one with a 3x3 grid powered only by the solid coal blocks i suggested in another thread. it would make smelting faster and more efficient.
The brick oven might not be too bad. Though, rather than a faster Furnace; I would make it with just brick, give it a different craft interface, and make it the default station for cooking, requiring all food be prepared there. Though, clay would need to be more readily available first.
I like the brick oven idea. It seem like a legit upgrade for the furnace. But gold doesn't seem like a good material to use in a furnace. Maybe there could be only 2 tiers (the original and the brick), but the brick one doubles the speed.
