It's always bothered me a little bit that so much breaking up of blocks and items in Minecraft has been so darn easy.
Here's my idea for the mill block.
First, the recipe.
Second, how is it powered and how does it work? Mostly it works the same way as a furnace, with different recipes, without using coal, and there is a much shorter wait time. I think the most interesting and fun way to implement the mill would be to have it only work if it is adjacent to a flowing water block. The mill would have a very simple animation, (animation on the same principle as water or lava) indicating whether it is powered or not. No power, no animation. Additionally, if a working furnace is in a space adjacent to the mill, it will have power.
As a special additional perk, a powered mill sends out redstone signal, so it almost acts as hydroelectric power.
Third, I know some people will complain about this, but I think some recipes will have to be removed to make room for the mill. Players can still get every item, but there will be additional steps in between.
Dyes, for example, would have to be made by placing their ingredients in the mill. Not all dyes though. I'd leave red and yellow dye alone. But I think bones and lapis lazuli should have to be milled.
Wheat would have to be milled into flour before it can be made into bread. And reeds would have to be milled into sugar.
Storage blocks, like iron, gold, diamond, and lapis lazuli blocks, will have to be placed in a mill to break them back down.
Fourth, some new options open up. The mill could make wood into woodchips, a block that falls like gravel, looks like dirt, and doesn't grow annoying grass on it, so you can finally make dirt paths.
Fifth, a powered mill could be damaging to mobs/players that touch it. It works like cactus, but it has a little bit more freedom in being able to place blocks next to it. Just remember the limitation of needing running water in an adjacent space. With this you can build another kind of slaughterhouse and mob trap.
seems like a lot of hassle just to get some dyes, still. i cn understand its usefulness, it always has bothered me a little to put wheat into a cake without making flour, i'm guessing this would also affect reeds?

Yep. It's open for debate, but my opinion is that reeds should have to be milled to make sugar.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
If you had to mill flour, you've just added another step to making something that heals 2 hearts.
Well it doesn't bother me. I already thought making bread was already too easy. But if it turns out this makes bread somehow unbalanced, then maybe bread could be turned up to 3 hearts.
Another possible change to bread would be to require only 1 lump of flour, rather than 3 stacks of wheat. So it would take more steps, but less ingredients.
I thought of another thing. Not that you'd need it, but it makes sense for a grinder: it would convert sandstone back into sand, and cobblestone into gravel.

I wish I was in this :C
Sure. I mean, I was thinking just if you got too close. Clicking on it is fine, but if you walk into the block, it damages you, the same as cacti.
Incidentally, it would also make a good garbage disposal. Just turn it on, and throw items on top of it.

(Hopefully someone picks it up before then, though.)
