Maps are pretty neato, but they also need a little sumpin' sumpin'. Something to make navigating and identifying landforms easier, and for either more detailed or more hugetastic maps. That's why I made this thread.
MAP TWEAKS
Maps would have some new functionality. Right-clicking with a map would go to the map screen: a more detailed version that takes up the entire screen. You can mouse over the blocks to see the coordinates of the moused-over regions, mouse over Markers and set options for the map. On the map screen, there would be a few buttons below the map. These include Zoom Size, Cave Mode, Rotation, and Clear Map. You could also name maps by mousing over the name in the corner and typing a new name in it's spot.
ZOOM LEVELS
The size of maps now is alright, but I could go for some more detailed (and more huge) maps. Setting the zoom level of the map could cater to this need. When you select the Zoom Size dialogue under the map, it will bring up a menu that has 4 buttons: Detailed, Normal, Big, and Huge. Detailed would show 1 block per pixel on the realtime map, suitable for town use.. Normal would be as it is now. Big would be less detailed, but covering more land than the others. Huge would be a size fit for mapping out entire continents, without detail.
CAVE MODE
Cave Mode would make it possible to map out the underground. It would reveal the networks of caves, in a color gradient. Think cave maps from that Cartographer thing.
ROTATION & CLEAR MAP
Simple. Rotate Map rotates the map by 90 degrees. Clear map, well, clears the map.
MARKING FLAGS
Crafted like:
(Replace White wool with any color. Cannot have two different colors, this is important.)
Marking Flags are a sign-like, non-block entity that can be placed on the map and given a name, like a sign also. The thing is, these little flags can have multiple colors and will appear as a colored dot (corresponding to the hue used in crafting) on the map. You can give the flag a name, 2 lines instead of four, and will be displayed on the side of the flag, and when the Marker is moused over on the map menu (mousing over the Marker will also show it's coordinates, so you can tell if it's on high ground or subterranean) . This, IMO, would be very useful for marking landmarks, towns, settlements, caves, dungeons, and other stuff needing markings.
That's all I got now. This would really make maps awesome and useful, if you ask me.
Please post any and all map ideas in the megamap thread, which can be found in the gigathread.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything

I doubt he will do that but my one problem with this is that caves can't be mapped since they are probably to complicated to map. The rest have been suggested in the map mega thread.
