I actually haven't done a mathematical statistical analysis on the frequency of red vs yellow flowers, but the five worlds I have created and the three SMP worlds I've been on, seems to suggest yellow flowers are 4 to 5 times more likely than red ones.
Since red flowers are used for making 5 different dyes (red, orange, pink, magenta, purple) and yellow only two (yellow, orange), I'd suggest reversing the frequency of flower propagation.
but growth would be a nice addition to minecraft, like if patches of flowers and shrubs would grow like +1 flower every 2 minecraft day and +1 shrub every minecraft day
It's purposely done like that to make it harder to get those dyes.
Thanks for the information, Notch...
On topic, I had noticed the same thing, and it does sort of bother me. Red is far more needed than yellow dye, and yet appears more than . Since dye is only useful for decoration, and not even a good building material, this does sort of confuse me. It's not serving any game-balancing function, and serves only to inconvenience the player. So, I agree, it really should be changed.
I'm really not sure what everybody is talking about.
There are two reasons that red flowers seem rarer:
1. people take them. Thus they are not there anymore, but people leave the yellow flowers.
2. they are using an old world. red flowers were, I'm fairly sure- much rarer in some earlier versions. I'm not sure if that is true or wether that is simply rule 1 at work. It didn't really matter then though because they were useless before 1.2.
To be fair, even with bone meal yellow flowers appear far more frequently than red (or so I've experienced, at least). In any case, the OP's suggestion is completely obsoleted by the fact we CAN use bone meal, which is renewable, to make as many flowers as we like.
I wouldn't say that it's completely obsoleted. Red flowers are still a pain to get, and AFAIK you can't get bonemeal on Peaceful (not that it would be too hard to up the difficulty and stay in shelter for a night to make the sun harvest it for you, I'll grant).

Well this is the sort of analysis I was saying I didn't do. Thanks for this! I don't argue with numbers, so I guess it's just a perception thing.

Also add growth, like mushroom only faster :smile.gif:
Why should it be harder to get thoose dyes, it just gets ridicilously hard and annoying trying to find red roses :/
And the red dye stands for no other purpose than colouring stuff, so why have it hard?
Will red and yellow flowers multiply if you plant them or are they just a fixed commodity?

Oh?
Then how come we can now use bone meal to get flower growth?
Could you cite a source for your claim? Because it doesn't seem to make sense, given the recent change.
