We all know that if you make a chest and stick it in a wall, you can't open the chest unless you've left 1 block of emptiness above the chest.
So what if Minecraft had shelves? For chests, it could be used like the hole in the wall method. You make a chest and put it on the shelf. Now, even if the top of the chest is blocked, since it's on the shelf, you can still open the chest.
You could also make it so individual items can be placed on the shelves without despawning. This could be used for shops or trophy cases and such.
