We should be able to turn the furnaces on and off to save fuel. When you put a bucket of lava in there it is a waste unless you keep filling it over and over. If you ran red stone to a lever you could stop the flame and save your fuel. It would stop the little flame right were it is and resume it when you flip the switch back.
Also, if you want to save fuel....
DON'T use lava...it's a waste.
Use coal/charcoal. And make sure everything is in multiples of 8.
If you have little extras, either wait, or just some wood.
If you want to cook food, use wood. It's reusable. Seriously, just have a few trees near by and keep replanting them, that should maintain your basic use of fuel.(I use 4.)
I wish I was in this :C
Redstone doesn't actually estiguish flames.
Of course it does. Research magic.

it would not put out the fire it would turn it off like s light switch
But... it's redstone! Not fire magic!

It's not that hard.
