Very nice idea, I read the first page, Didn't go further, But it would be interesting if it actually dug the sand making a tunnel, let me describe a picture.
You are walking along in the desert and all of a sudden sand blocks start caving in, in a beeline path straight at you(from where the sand is caving in on the Antlion's tunnels) you desperately turn around and sprint the hell out of there not knowing what is coming your way, but to your misfortune the antlion quickly out maneuvers you, Shooting up out of the sand grabbing onto your leg with it's strong mandibles bringing you to your untimely death by being eaten alive.
****in BRILLIANT!
Also, as a possible drop, maybe it drops either carapace shards, to be made into armour and/or tools, such as a carapace pickaxe, hard enough to destroy stone, but nothing else, or antlion legs (I mean it has a possibility to drop either), which are like sticks in everyway aside from the fact that they are not made out of wood, and are not usable in a furnace.
Would allow for complete desert life.

Warriors of Chaos!!!
Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, Nurgle - So many ways to die, so few times to do so.
I also have an idea for where they spawn. Perhaps you would find sand caves occasionally, meaning if you touched a single block of it, it would all collapse and several antlions would be within. They would spawn in areas of very, very low light on sand, making sand caves an ideal area for them to spawn.

I don't know sled teams but I do know I put my dog on an electric treadmill once and dangled a chicken leg. Treadmill puppy ensued.
personally, i like the idea, but i doubt notch would put this in the game for one reason. publicity. you see, lots of people think that half life created the antlion. People will think notch ripped off half life 2. Notch will get a bad rep. It's a good idea, but it simply won't happen.
Environment: The Desert! AI: Very hostile Drop: ??? Misc: The Antlion is a clever and ferocious predator. It lurks just beneath the surface of loose sand, waiting for happless prey to venture too near. When the poor creature is within striking distance, the Antlion lashes out and attacks it's victim. Somewhat clumsy on the surface, the Antlion will retreat to the safety of the sand if it's prey gets away from it. Waiting for the next creature to come along.
The Antlion would attack pretty quickly, but would be very slow walking. If the player gets outside of striking distance for too long (a few seconds), the Antlion retreats beneath the surface again. Of course the player can try to dig up the Antlion and continue the battle if they so wish.
Not sure what they should drop. Let me know what you think!
Here's an idea: instead of screwing around with tunnels, the antlion AI simply chooses when to and when to not regard sand as an actual solid object. This means that it can "swim" and "burrow" in sand without actually editing blocks and mucking around with caving in and editing the terrain. Of course, it would be nice to have some indication this thing is coming for you, so the top block of the stack of sand it is under should be bumped up slightly, only graphically though. When the antlion gets 10 blocks or less from the player, it heads through the sand towards them at moderate speed. When it gets within 5 blocks, its AI switches to "recognize sand" mode, in which it pops to the surface and starts attacking. it should probably do lots of damage, but be very slow and lose interest easily, meaning that if one catches you by surprise you can get away pretty quickly without dying. When it either kills the player or loses interest, its AI switches back into "don't recognize sand" mode, and it sinks back into the desert.
I was mentioning about the tougher type of antlion, and the piston thumping, neither of which were your suggestions :smile.gif:

Antlions are BA in real life. I think this idea captures that BA, even if it isn't completely ferocious-looking.
