This is a very simple idea of mine. It's not very important (as in it doesn't phase me if this doesn't get implemented, there are many more greater suggestions than this), but do you think when placing a rail in a diagonal position (leading up/down), the block it's sitting on should then act as if they were compact stairs? I think it would work nicely, and it doesn't sound like it would be hard to code. It's just a bit annoying to have to jump up diagonal rails all the time because they are a non solid object.
its true it wont be hard to code, but notch and his 'whole' Dev Team only usualy add 1-3 blocks each patch when a standered coder could write all minecrafts code up in a week. the point is that it will take them a month to figure out how to do any simple modifications without bugging everything up
Sweet let us know when your version of Minecraft is coming out. I assume by the 13th?
Well, maybe not a week, but take a look at how quickly the Terreria team had a final product up and going... A few months?
I don't know how long it took Terraria to make their 2-d side scroller for Windows. I also don't know how that's supposed to relate to the time it takes to make a 3-d first person perspective game that runs on 3 major operating systems (and now at least one mobile platform).
I mean, I just ate some peanuts. Why does it take those guys on Iron Chef a full hour to make a meal?

Did you know I write Science Fiction? Well I do. Check it out at http://planetretcon.com/books/
