Would it be possible to make a tool, like a drafting square, out of iron or wood?
Example, you would build the square by arranging the building material on the workbench as so:
X___X___X
X___-___-
X___-___-
Once the tool was created, you could right-click on any block surface to create a "Wireframe" block. Right-clicking on a Wireframe a second time would delete the Wireframe block. Once one Wireframe block is down, you may place another on top of it and create a wireframe of the entire structure ahead of time.
This way, you could place down a sort of plan for the structure you wish to construct, then simply place a block of material within the Wireframe block, and the Wireframe would automatically disappear.
This would make it much easier to plan out construction of large structures while playing legit and avoid making mistakes that then take time to fix, as you need to break down blocks one-by-one and rebuild them correctly.
It would also make it possible to build the proper "scaffolding" ahead of time so that you can just fly when the time to do the real building starts.
Also, an option could be included, for the especially lazy, to "fill" a line of Wireframe blocks with the selected material in the direction you are facing by right-clicking a material block on the Wireframe. It would just remove the necessary number of blocks from your inventory, or fail to work if you don't have enough.
I would prefer this if it didn't actually have an option to create a section of blocks for you, I like it purely for the structure planning aspect.
Its a good idea, its worth refining it a little.
Truly, I doubt if I'd ever use that option if it was there. It just seemed like a natural path to take, but it also seems to take the fun out of it, doesn't it?

I think it being implemented with a writing tool, such as charcoal refined into a sort of pen, and you could have a little black and white structure drawing, with a little graphics interface.
That's not a bad idea! It might be better to have non-substantial but translucent blocks rather than simple wireframe. It would probably be less disorienting to see textured blocks of some sort rather than a whole mess of wire lines going every which way.
Incidentally, what did you mean by "graphics interface"? To control what?
Oh, just like a little box to the side, with a delete tool and so on. Might not be the best thing to do...
Actually, that might be the best thing to do.
I just noticed that if you use my orginal idea, you wouldn't be able to stack blocks, as right clicking on a drafting block a second time would delete it, not stack a block on top of it.

I got a warning for bumping this thread? I didn't bump once! Bloody facists!
Was it an informal warning or an actual warning? If it was informal (I know Spiteful gives those out), it isn't an actual warning but if it was an actual one, PM a mod and contest it. You never once bumped this without adding something to it or replying to someone.
OT: I like the idea. You should change destroying the Wireframe block with right click to making it break instantly when left clicked. Also, it might help to make the crafting recipe out of actual smileys. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be made like this:

This would be great for building! Marking out my stone structures with dirt gets really annoying. Would it be possible to put ladders and torches on it?
