The idea has been brought up before, but I don't want to necropost. Plus, I believe my idea is original.
So, basically, by creating a chair and a table, you create a station. I've always felt that Steve needs to sit down. He's always standing. I thought that perhaps the chair could heal you very, very slowly. It could also, in SMP, keep the chat window open. Imagine multiple players sitting down and chatting, while they heal after having been in a battle spelunking.
Then I thought, if we add a table, the table could be storage for food items. Only while on the table, can these items stack. You sit in the chair and face the table. Then, like cake works, you click on a placed item, and it heals you. Imagine stacked pork, up to...say 16? That sounds fair. You right click, and it takes one off the stack and heals you. Right click the table to see how much of each item there is. One slot per table. A table can be as small one block, like a chair, but like a chest, if you put some together, it makes a bigger table. The table can be limitlessly improved (so we can make long tables for players who want mansion-sized dining rooms or mess halls).
Please comment if you like the idea, or want to suggest alterations.
Because of Steve's weird sitting animation in boats, I thought that perhaps instead of chairs, we make stools. Whatever works.
Sounds well thought-out and pretty balanced. I like it. I think they'd have to be a bit more difficult to make, though, like maybe a single diamond or something per chair, seeing as they DO heal you (VERY slowly, though.) The table sounds good, also. It could have about the same storage space as a small chest. However, I think they should only stack to about 8.
But really, I DO like these ideas!
Well it is semi-original, given that it has been modified to what most people usually go for when suggesting Tables/Chairs/Both.
It is a fairly interesting concept I must admit. I saw something like this, but the dinner table resembling bit could work fairly well. Given that you wind up with Roleplaying servers out there this could improve the RP aspect by just a bit.
Perhaps you could also tweak it just a bit more so it doesn't seem like the constant rehashing of Table Chair Combo.
That's just the first 4. If you continue through search, you'll find hundreds more of the same suggestion, additionally some that suggest chairs healing.
Furthermore, if sleeping doesn't heal you, sitting leisurely in a chair shouldn't either.

I looked through those four. Most of them suggest aesthetics, not function, which is what I am providing. Second, the chair healing bit was an initial idea, but it's far more realistic if I'm eating food off the table. And as you said, if the bed doesn't heal, neither should a chair. Simple suggestion I thought I might add in anyway. But I prefer that the chair would give you access to the table in order to eat, as well as keep the chat menu presented, as you have to keep pressing T to keep it up in SMP.
Just because I mention furniture does not mean I'm being unoriginal. All the ideas out there assume aesthetic standpoints. I am as well, but primarily with function in mind. I find my specific ideas are also different from others, and I prefer not necroing a thread to suggest my alternative idea. I find my voice is better heard in a new thread.
I also believe this idea really fits in with Minecraft. It seems to fit right in (exclude the slow heal in chair). Other suggestions I've read are overwrought.
I won't deny that details I've presented are similar to others', cause they are. But my specific combination of details is what I think is most worthy of being presented.
Either way, redundant thread or not, I want to see if what I've presented is in accordance with everyone else.
I extremely like your take on the table and chairs idea. But the chair healing you would be VERY slow. You should also put craft recipetes up.
It's not difficult to come up with a simple recipe for tables or chairs, so I won't bother. I'm also not familiar with this new forum. Are all the pictures of blocks still on the forum? I can't find them. Probably haven't looked hard enough.

Now. Do you HONESTLY think people are going to recognize support from 26+ separate suggestions mixed through 1100+ pages? I don't have the time to go browsing all of the articles; and apparently you don't have the time to search. Hey, if we; as casual forum browsers, do not have the time to search; what makes you think Notch does?
What if Bravo~Zulu instead SUPPORTED ALPHA'S SUGGESTION?! Do you not think that 26+ yeses on a single thread more than outweights the 5 nos that originally doomed the suggestion?
Let's do the math. Let's assume 300 people have the same idea.
EXAMPLE 1: 300 people create 300 threads. Each thread has 1 yes and 5 nos.
In total, you have 300 yeses and 1500 nos (16.67% yes, 83.33% no)
EXAMPLE 2: 1 person creates a thread, 299 others contribute. This thread has 300 yeses and 5 nos
In total, you have 300 yeses and 5 nos. (98.36% yes, 1.64% no)
Which, do you think, speaks more loudly? Can you tell which one is more popular?
Support the original suggestion, if your suggestion is similar but differs, I can guarantee you're the only one whom cares, post on the original suggestion anyway. Tell them your similar idea on the original thread. When it comes down to it, Notch; if he takes the idea, will take only the basic concept and scrap everything else in preference of HIS implementation.

That's very sound, but you assumed my mission was to get Notch to implement my idea. I was looking for peer review, so to say. And so far, my idea has been recognized by a few forum-goers. This tells me that my idea is sound (because said peers did not say "Awesome!" and end it, they actually put more than ten words into it). That's all I really wanted. And I assume Notch has heard enough about chairs and tables, or thought enough about it. I never intended to use this thread to reach him. It was just throwing my two cents out there without necroing other threads. Don't bother replying. If people are tired of hearing about chairs and tables, then they won't care to post or even read. Let it die.
the tables sound ok but I think there should be more than 1 type of chair, there can be a dinning chair a leather chair (for sitting epically infront of a fire place) and when placing chairs together the could make expanded seats
ex.2 dinning chairs beside eachother = bench, 2-3 leather chairs = couch or chesterfeild. Im tired of pretending stairs are chairs.
