This idea entails adding a block that you can use to make books and written pieces of paper. It would be made as shown below:
[iron] [iron] [iron]
[iron] [Redstone] [iron]
[iron] [iron] [iron]
It would work like a furnace. You place the color ink you want in the bottom (Inc comes from squid!). Then place paper in the top and type. Each page can have a title and then so many characters/symbols to fill it up.
Once you are ready to make a book, you can take the pages you have made and put them in order in the crafting table to make a book!
Books can be copied by placing the book you want copied in the "Fuel Area" and then place a blank book in the recipe area.
This book when held would be opened, and a right click would turn pages. Of course you would have to look down to read it (Like a map).
Now bookshelves can be used!
-You right click on a book shelf to store up to 9 books!
Imagine how much fun it could be in SMP to pass directions or knowledge to each other. Imagine how convenient it would be to right down things you have learned or actually have a cook book for reference.
P.S. Who's to say Notch couldn't add recipes for combining books with other items to make special books, or combine maps to make an Atlas?! This idea could open many more doors to the fun to be had with minecraft!!!
It's not a terrible idea, but it seems needlessly complex. I think most people would prefer that if books can be written in, you not need special equipment (at least beyond ink and maybe a quill/feather).

I share your concern, but I think a printing press wouldn't be complex at all. If anything it is far simpler than most ideas.
I'd rework this. Have books writable as in llama's Arts suggestion (in my sig).
Use the Printing Press for duplication. You'd put a written book, or a filled/partially-filled map in the left input slot, an empty book or map in the middle slot, probably some ink or something in a 'fuel' slot, and bingo, a duplicate appears in the output.
The current map copying method is a bit sloppy, which is why I think it could be added to a table such as this.

There is a current way to copy maps.
