Minecarts usually rely on push force, powered minecarts or powered rail. And its really hard to try use all those things together so why can't minecarts be coupled together so they move together. Usually powered minecarts push a minecart which gives it moment for a second before it pushes it again, with coupling it would give it a constant stream of momentum. It would also provide a better way to use storage minecarts.
The way to couple them together would be to make iron chains by making a cross on a 3x3 crafting grid which would make three iron chains. You then put them in a three long straight line on a 3x3 crafting grid to make a couplink. Then again using a 3x3 grid put a minecart (or storage or powered) on one side, another on the other side then the couplink in the middle to make a "Coupled Minecart 2" and you can keep coupling together as you please.
This has also been suggested by use of rope. Where three strings in a row make a rope, then while holding the rope you right click on the minecarts you want linked. Either way, chains or ropes, I support linking minecarts.
YES! Finnaly, a good solution to Minecarts.
Also, if you'd like to add this to your thread, then please do:
For SMP, a minecart that to people must ride, and press space to gain speed, but the other must press space before you. Basicly its one of those minecarts with the big long bar and 2 sets of handles that you boath push to move along.
One of those handcart thingmajics. That would be awesome, should Notch add this. Hopefully if we make enough noise about it

Good idea or not?
And not having to chase after them on powered rail or downhill
