I feel that a sword and a bow are just not enough. i believe it would be better to have a variance of weapons with different attributes, like perhaps a katana that has a somewhat weaker attack but allows you to move a bit faster while being attacked. or a strong long range weapon that's a bit slower like a javelin, and can be picked up after being thrown. or something simple like a spear puts some distance between you and the enemy when attacking but has a smaller point of attack. although adding to many weapons would just become to complicated.

Well, this has potential, but you should add more uses, weapons, how much it would hurt the mob it hits, what is the durability of them, etc...
i would still like for the weapons to deal a certain amount of damage depending on the material they are made of, same goes for durability. and weapon classes would be helpful as well. and long range weapon made of wood would deal 1/2 heart damage and diamond would deal maybe 4 or 5 heart damage. and with a fast close range weapon basically cut the damage in half from a normal weapon to even out the speed and damage ratio. i will compose a list of weapons and damage ratio, as well as durability.

spear:damage ratio wood:1 stone:1.5 iron:2 diamond:5
can be thrown far and picked back up. good for taking skeleton out.
javelin:damage ratio wood:.5 stone:1 iron:1.5 diamond:3
can be thrown far and picked back up basically a weaker version of the spear.
Katana: damage ratio wood:2 stone:3 iron:5 diamond:8
weaker version of the sword. gives player the ability to move faster because it is lighter.
the greater quality of material used the faster you become.
Maul: damage ratio wood:2 stone:4 iron:6 diamond:9
very powerful weapon, also very heavy depending on the material used, it will slow the player down quite a bit.
jousting pole: damage ratio wood:3 stone:4 iron:6 diamond:9
also a powerful weapon. allows player to temporarily use a dash move running into opponents with great force. the greater the material the longer the dash. also after running into opponent player will jump back 1 block to avoid being damaged.
Great sword:damage ratio iron:9 diamond:instant kill
this weapon takes an incredible amount of materials to make. But the ending result is very much worth it. the Great sword last 2 times as long as a normal sword. only problem is that if great sword is in the players hand they can barley move.
Defender: damage ratio iron:3 diamond:6
the defender is well a defense weapon. it is mainly used to block powerful attacks such as from explosions or a great sword. its durability is unlimited but the materials required to make it is very much ridiculous.
weapons with elemental attributes.
any weapon above except defender can be combined with an element such as fire ice or poison. to combine fire simply combine with a flint and steel (not recommended for wood weapons). ice simply add snow. poison add a red mushroom. great sword requires twice as much to combine.
