Inspired by almost (if not all) every survival show ever.
WHAT IS IT?
Just like the title says, I am suggesting floating reeds. It is a bit more complex than just: punch reed -> gather reed -> equip reed -> right-click in water. It is another possible way to have larger boats.
First you need to craft a raft block:
= reed = string
This recipe yields one raft block.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
It will look like 5 reeds laying flat with string wrapped around either end. It is a 1x1x1 block, and when in the water would take up the space of that water block, except that the water is simply not colliding with the raft. (Similar to how the boat doesn't collide with the water).
WHAT DOES IT DO?
When your near water you can equip the raft block and right-click on the water. This will place the raft block in the water. It will have the physics on a boat. When you place a raft block next to another raft block they will "connect", and act as one block. These can be built upon so you can make what ever you want with them.
Also, being a 1x1x1 block you can build off on it while on land and than place it in the water by either:
A: Pistons when implemented.
B: Breaking all the blocks underneath as when not touching water it acts as a 1x1x1 block that isn't affected by gravity, and flooding the area. You would need to place one water source above to touch the raft block so it gains the physics of the boat.
HOW DO YOU PILOT IT?
By right-clicking on a placed raft block with nothing equipped you will sit on it just like in a boat, and you will drive it like a boat.
=================================================================
So it's like a boat, without being able to drive it? I see what you're getting at, and I like the whole survival-boat-made-with-reeds idea, but please elaborate a bit.
Q. Can you drive this "boat?"
If yes, then why bother? We already have a boat, and modular boat building has been suggested before.
If no, then again, why bother, it would just be another block, only this one moves with the waves.
Q.Can this "boat" be made to be an indefinite size, as long as you have a body of water to hold it?
If yes, then this whole idea is impractical. The boats will get too big.
If no, then how do you plan on limiting the size?
Interesting idea. Not sure how useful it is, but cool nonetheless.
FYI @ funkdefied: There is a bit of your sig that is wrong. the One Up button is in the bottom right, not bottom left.

1. Yes, by right-clicking on a reed block while nothing is equipped, and that idea is vastly different by adding all these other recipes, and that idea is much more linear by requiring all the other recipes first.
2. Indefinite. The point is that you can build ANYTHING you want, just like land bases, but these move on water. It's only impractical of you build it to an impractical point.
Nice idea, it would be pretty cool for adventure maps. But can you steer it? Like, if you right-clicked on it, would you sit on it, and somehow pole/whatever it along? And then other people could stand on it? :tongue.gif:
Eh. It's ok, but making massive moving structures would be really hard to implement and we don't have too much open water anyways. If we got an ocean biome? Sure. But I'd keep it as just a raft block for now, maybe being able to only expand it using more raft blocks.

As in you don't want the idea of putting other blocks on it until larger bodies of water are added?
Some more constructive critisism here (Boy, I must really be a nuisance :wink.gif: )
I have two (main) questions:
1. You said that right clicking on the boat with nothing equipped will allow you to pilot the boat. But how does minecraft decide which block to put you on? Will it put you on the furthest block north? The original reed block (the first on placed)? The block you actually clicked on?
I personally have no idea how this would work out, but an idea just came to me. If this were implemented in SMP, then people would be able to make massive boats that the whole server could right. This, of course, raises another question: If you wanted players on a server with you to ride you're boat with you, would they have to right click the boat and ride it like you would a boat (this would mean extra riders are totally immobile while riding the boat, only being able to move their eyes), or could players ride the boat just by standing on it?
The obvious answer would probably be that players could literally just jump on you're boat, without needing to right click it. However, if the reed-boat were to follow the same physics that the vanilla boats do now, then jumping on the boat would either cause it to shoot out from under you, or slide under you as if you weren't there. Having all riders required to right click to ride the boat would eliminate this possible "bug."
Notch could also tweak the boat physics to allow for riders to just jump on and run around on these reed-boats. This could allow for the possibility of giant house-boats.
2. You said that you could build off of reed blocks like you would any other block, if they were placed on land. Does this mean you could potentially have boats that have been made vertically? Could you place reed blocks on top of other reed blocks?
I have some thoughts on this:
I actually like this idea, because if you were to allow builders to place reed-blocks on top of other reed-blocks, it would allow for the possibility of house boats, with roofs and such. So, to make this plausible, you would need to add two rules to building:
a) The first is that only reed-blocks could attach to reed-blocks. This would mean that if you tried to place, for instance, a stone or dirt block next to a reed-block (while on land) then nothing would happen. The stone block would not place. This is similar to how torches cannot be placed on glass. This would eliminate the possibility of having giant obsidian castles floating around on the water.
:cool.gif: Uhhh... I forgot :tongue.gif: . I spent so much time typing out the first rule, I forgot what I was gonna put for the second. I'll edit this when I remember.
EDIT: I really do like this idea :biggrin.gif: . It has so much potential.

That's the point. Giant house boats. This could help a lot in SMP with trading by placing chests on boats, or even putting the shop itself on the boat.

Yes, you could place them on top of other reed blocks, but if you were to make a boat shape vertically and you placed a water source to "activate" it. It would float as if it were vertical.

For rule A. Your only referring to adjacent and not on top of... right?
As in you don't want the idea of putting other blocks on it until larger bodies of water are added?
Basically, yes. I would LOVE a giant moving fortress but unless I can actually do quite a bit of traveling with it there isn't much point. Most masses of water barely take up a few chunks. We need actual Ocean biomes before I find that part feasible.
Edit: I think he was referring to making rafts like this ONLY out of Reeds. Frankly, I think that would work better than any block being placeable on it. Or maybe lighter blocks like Wool and Planks?

Yeah true. I wonder if Notch will ever do that, because he REALLY should.

I love the idea, it'd make building ships even more fun than just having anchored and useless beautiful ships.
Floating cities and fortresses are also a good idea.
My only worry is the lag of moving that many blocks at once.
Yeah, I had thought about the lag that larger scaled ideas could cause.
