Okay, so one day, while playing minecraft, an idea came to me. "We should have fishmen."
And from there, my idea grew and grew.
I thought fishmen worked something like this:
The fishmen are humanoid beings, who can surface to land for around 2-3 (Minecraft) days, in search of other ponds/seas/lakes/other bodies of water, looking for some kind of resource (Seaweed/moss/algae maybe?) Which they feed on/make cool elixirs and dyes and what not.
They would also rise up occasionally for no reason, but just to explore the world their species have been missing for all the years they've spent underwater. They would run to the nearest body of water for the night, possibly even make a small home there. They should also be a target for hostile mobs, and be able to fight back (it sounds a bit impossible to code now, but I'm just giving my plain idea of making going underwater fun). This species should be able to build homes underwater (maybe of glowstone for added effect), and work just like the possible pigmen villages. These mobs are neutral and if killed, should drop some sort of fish or gill or something. Or even fish eggs to propagate like trees.
After the fishmen had been invented, I thought of another mob (maybe hostile this time):
The Swamp Monster is a solitary being, unlike the previously stated fishmen. This mob lives in little caves found near small bodies of water found in-land. They are covered in a mixture of slime, mud and foliage, and leave their caves and ponds during night, where they hunt passive mobs and the player (i feel this is hard to code as well, but just my idea for expansion of the world underwater.) They wouldn't be affected by the sun. They're movement would be as fast as a zombie. Upon death, they would drop its hide, which could be crafted into something like a camouflage set of armor
(Still sounds very hard, maybe this part of the idea can be scrapped. But its still kinda cool to ninja some creepers) Which would give the endurance of golden armor, but some sort of concealing effect (could also improve PvP combat). These mobs would be rare to find though, unless your world would make quite a lot of caves with water. And just by saying that, I thought that these guys might spawn underground, in caverns with water. Maybe, just maybe, you can program it to not spawn below a certain elevation.
My mind went back to fishmen, and I thought, "Why not they have a few little helpers?", so the sea monkeys were born:
Sea monkeys are tiny little critters (something like as big as a chicken's leg) which help dig sand and sandstone up and make little houses for fishmen to live in. These guys should zip around like they're on steroids, and have only one heart of health. If they are killed, they drop fishmen eggs, sand, or larva (any of the three). If you keep them in an enclosed space, they will pile up the sand/sandstone they have collected, and attempt to suffocate themselves, for they have sworn they allegiance to the fishmen and the fishmen only. If they suffocate themselves, they drop nothing.
So what do you guys think about this idea? What could be added to improve the idea? What could be removed to improve it? I know this would be a big challenge trying to code this, Notch may not accept it, but your opinion counts too.
Good ideas. Sea monkey suggestion is cute too. :happy.gif:
We need to see what kind of pigmen Notch meant, but after that I don't see why not implement this kind of idea of fishmen. We just have to see. What I like in your idea is that these fishmen are little humanoid beings that live underwater and that you may likely see one whenever you have a trip beneath the waves yourself. I don't know about the "fishmen visit the land" idea. Maybe too much. Maybe the fishmen could be "the mermen and mermaids of the Grand Sea of Minecraft" type of mob? Small underwater houses sound interesting, but yet again we need to see what Notch has in store for us with the pigmen.
Spawn Monster in the other hand is great! Afterwards the world gets to have swamps, this mob will be welcome with open arms I am sure. At the moment the world may not have a suitable place to match this mob, but this would be a fresh addition for them. :smile.gif:
Ninja armor? Very interesting suggestion, but I would drop the protection part. A ninja is a weapon. As a ninja you don't need protection. It is your targets who need it. :wink.gif: Ninja is possible to be noticed and seen however, but usually that means you need to know how, when and where to look. Then again to actually spot a ninja could mean that it could be your last person you will see. In this game, maybe not your last exactly since you are resurrected back to life every now and then. :biggrin.gif: LOL
To be able to camouflage amongst the environment should be enough purpose to have that kind of armor set, but I think it needs more penalties. Maybe the only tool you could use to successfully even try to assassin someone is to use the sword? Also what it could have is that you would not become absolutely invisible. To hide yourself amongst the nature you would need to stay still. Yeah, I think that is it. That should do it. Mobs could leave you alone and other players move near you without any notice of your presence, but you would not want to move unless you want to loose your camouflage. I am not sure about the material that the armor set could be crafted from, but the idea is very interestin. Also to make it even more balanced is to make a mob that can sense your presence maybe?
Prepare for a little long story. xD
I suggest a necromancer and a ghoul for this job. A necromancer is passive-defensive floating mob with a violet-purple hooded cloak. A necromancer will teleport itself away whenever it is attacked with projectiles and it likes to resurrect recently died players into servitude for itself if any are nearby that is. They channel minor boosts to the players resurrected as ghouls this way to make them able to fight for them. Necromancers could also sense a living presence nearby like I suggested so that a ninja could not be able to ambush them. This could mean that a ninja alone, would not be able to beat a necromancer and the ghoul minion(s).
This adds another viewpoint to the game with a new mini-game which I like to call Damsel in Ghoul-distress. :biggrin.gif:
A ghoul ( resurrected player with a temporary brown-ish or light blue-ish ghoul texture ) a living corpse brought to life by a necromancer. Ghoul will gain simple minor speed, damage and protection boosts from it's master due to the link between. Nothing special here thou yet. They are just a little quicker which means they are able to run, they have claws which deal damage equal to a stone sword and they also have the protection of leather armor. They also have a durability reduction so after awhile their claws will become dull and their rate to endure damage decreases radically. Now imagine that the ghoul player dies. It will be resurrected again if the necromancer is yet alive. It will take couple seconds and you are back again ready to continue. The idea here is simple. While you are still "alive", make it so that the other players attack the necromancer instead. After that everything is clear. Or so it may seem to some of you. :tongue.gif:
Necromancers are careful about how much power they lend to their servants because with enough boost, the ghouls could decide to go against them since they still have their own minds while a necromancer just has the leash. Ghouls cannot come too near their necromancer masters however due to this "failsafe" component added as a part of the resurrection ritual. Ghoul will attack by charging toward their target(s) with claws. This is treated as a "ranged" attack and thus whenever a ghoul should try to hit it's master, the necromancer master will teleport away. This makes it impossible for you to beat your master. This is why you need a fellow player to do that and to make the players notice this, you don't have a choice, but to lead the necromancer to the nearest player base. Of course others would simply think that a mobster party is going after them and begin to attack which would be exactly what you want. I am quite sure you guessed the idea already. :biggrin.gif:
In theory the player decides what to do while in the ghoul form and the necromancer just follows him or her. If the player gets too far, the necromancer master will tighten the leach to slow you down. You will have couple choices here. Explore the world in the ghoul form and enjoy it for a time or go and attack a player to become attacked and thus possibly "saved" from your ill fate. You could also become passive and die while the necromancer flees, but the thing is that the spawn point of yours will stay near the necromancer and thus you will be resurrected again as a ghoul until the necromancer truly is dead.
Players that are alive and well could attempt to "save" the ghouls from their torture eternal by slaying them and their masters. Whenever you succeed to slay a necromancer the ghoul is free again, but it is still a ghoul. The shared powers are also gone, but at least they are off the leash. As a ghoul there are some merits, but also demerits. You can play a watch dog for your friends because the undead mobs ( skeleton archers and zombies ) become neutral toward you unless you provoke them to attack you and also you don't know how to breath so you don't know how to drown. Then there are the not so funny things. You don't know how to swim so you would sink like a rock to the bottom, you don't know how to mine which makes it harder to get up even from a moat and of course you as a ghoul cannot use any items which again you don't know how to use. Explanation is simple. You don't remember because you were resurrected differently. :smile.gif:
Now you have two choices. Either you "serve" your new "living masters" as a watch dog until you get bored and accidentally try to drown just to remember that you did not know how to drown or you could just go hug a creeper. At least you would make one creeper happy. They don't get many hugs these days. :biggrin.gif: LOL
This means that to make a ghoul become ordinary player again, it needs to die first and then be resurrected again thru ordinary way. Just watch out for any necromancers this time. Good to know that they usually wander some forsaken ruins or deep forests so if you happen to die on a beach while tanning your skin, you should be "safe"... so to speak. xD
Now for the sea monkeys.
They sound adorable! :biggrin.gif: ...except let them be like the Minecraft variations of seahorses perhaps? No connection to fishmen and let those waterbreathing monkeys full of steroids zip and zap their way under the waves. If you happen to cross your path with one or two, they could hurt you due to their speed. Half a heart could be lost this way and then they would just swim away. Maybe if you are lucky, you could find a clam shell with a pearl if you succeed following them for awhile. :happy.gif:
Not sure about the purpose of the pearl, but maybe just eat the clam then? :biggrin.gif: LOL

I like the sea monkey idea. No fishmen, we don't want to overflow minecraft with so many mobs.
Oooh, 14! This is getting pretty high! Better stop before we get to 20!
Sorry, had to post that. Minecraft needs a lot more verity in mobs, and this seems like it could do it. They could be squid hunters! But we need more underwater stuff before this, like seaweed.
Love the idea of all of this espcially the ninja armor
my only concern is with the necromancr idea maybe we should have a range that he can control his minions? maybe 50 blocks or so? That way you dont have to worry about finding the same necromancer that did it to you.
and the fishmen i find the fact that they get out of water a bit to much. but i like the idea of them dropping eggs. caviear anyone? lol ( or however you spell that food that made of fish eggs)
and oh yeah i love the idea of the sea monkeys :laugh.gif:
