I have thought about how apples are so very rare and it annoys me especially since they heal next to nothing. I noticed that there are other topics on this subject but none of them have talked about the way I propose. And yes i do know that there are mods for this but I believe it is always MUCH better when the legit version includes awesome stuff like this.
My Idea
My idea is to use golden apples as saplings for Apple Trees. Using Golden Apples, I believe, is a good idea as it still requires an apple to begin with (meaning a lot of searching for dungeons with apples), as well as 8 gold blocks (72 Gold ingots). This means that they would still be very rare as very hard to achieve.
The trees could also have low spawn rates of apples (and possible even to have them be destroyed if they were to hit the ground, requiring the player to actually catch the apples off the tree).

Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me...
I think apple trees, if implemented, should be planted either with apples or with apple saplings, and gold apples should be taken out of the ****ing game. Never in my life will you see me score so much coke that I figure it's a right idea to waste seventy-two gold on some ******** apple.
And one would supose it has oak wood as a trunk, in which to chop?

With wool, we know that it is possible to assign 16 different damage values to a block type in order to create more variety. So far we only have three types of wood, leaving room for up to 13 more types of trees using the same damage value system. Apple trees could be made to use one of those 13 remaining damage values. In order to keep things simple, apple trees would function just like the other tree types. They should spawn with less frequency than the standard oak tree, and would grow via sapplings like the other tree types. However, each leaf block of an apple tree would have a certain percent chance of dropping an apple or an apple + sappling when destroyed either by the player or by natural leaf decay. There would also be an extremely slim chance of a leaf block dropping a gold apple instead of a red apple.
