It doesn't really server any purpose. Why would I want to set it on fire? That's just a waste of coal and given the rate of fire spread it's faster just to mine it, not to mention safer. And besides IRL coal is not exactly flammable and it almost certainly isn't as a raw ore. Oil is much better idea.
Well it would just be to add realism to the game, and it's not like coal is rare or anything.
And what do you mean col isn't flammable!? Did you even click the link I provided?
I've often thought it would be pretty cool if I could come across coal in the walls of caves, and instead of mining, just set it on fire.
I'm not sure if it should burn forever like netherrack, or eventually become consumed like wood. Maybe it should just get consumed extremely slowly. This might be a way to expose other kinds of ore deposits, just slower than actually mining.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Well coal comes in veins so it would spread to the others. Like I said it would just be to add realism to the game.
Oh and as for the whole dethklok thing, i just feel stupid now...
See how in a single block there is a bunch of stone around the tiny specks of coal? That's what I meant. Therefore it can't set on fire because only 1 speck of coal at a time would ignite, not the whole block.
I went to a coal mine and they said somebody accidently lit up a strip of coal and it's still burning now. It burned for miles. IDK how but when the fire cracks rock around it, it feed it more oxigen allowing coal strips to burn forever.
Also, how about making the stone around the coal turn to cobblestone?
(IRL flaming coal ore cracks the rock around it)
Does everything have to have a purpose? IMO NO. I think it would be cool if ore was in every large quantities and weren't all that close together, just like in real life. So you can have a coal mine, redstone mine, gold mine and so on, and in the coal mine if you you put a torch a bit to close to some coal then there is a slim chance that your entire mine or at least what can't save is lost and have to find another coal mine.
