Basically, I think it would be really cool if backpacks were added. The crafting recipe would be leather in the same shape as chest armor, just upside-down. It would increase the size of your inventory when worn in the chest armor slot. I don't know how much space it could add, I was think one row...
Also, I do not know if this has been suggested already.
I like it, but as llama pointed out. You should start with a much smaller inventory, making gathering leather the most important task to do on day 2 after you have spent the first night inside your shelter (probably with torches, crafting table, furnace, chest and a door).
Maybe you would start with only 3x4 slots as default, and then not getting the full inventory before crafting a back pack.
It should first be much much later into the game that you might get the ability to carry around more stuff.
Fail Wizard is annoying a bit. I don't want to offend but he is on almost every site saying almost the exact same thing. If he is a moderator or what ever they are called then...
Sorry. I understand why.

I sort of support this but not have it in the same slot as armor because...
1) Start with a smaller Inventory
2) Would like to have my armor on too. Definitely
Another Idea. How about you craft it and then another recipe of leather but with this in it to craft a bigger one. So craft the back pack (Pouch) and another recipe, pouch and leather makes backpack. And because it ahs it's own slot it you can only wear one at a time. Obviously you'd want the back pack.

Ys -Crying- Why! Why must Sarah die! Why! At least there is still Feena and Reah to guide Adol through his Journey. But... Sarah got turned to stone... That is just plain cruel. Stupid Monsters.

Alright this is a good idea... There can be a backpack to get what you have now which doesn't have to be in the armor slot, it would be more like a pouch, to make the backpack, you need to do this.
LOL
LPL
OXO. L=leather
O=iron
P=the ouch you make to get the normal inventory
X=is an empty slot
The iron would be sort of like the buckles for the backpack, and this one, you need to wear in the armor slot, it is the cost of increasing your inventory size, along with iron and 12 leather. It will increase the inventory by a whole row.
I like that the backpack will block the chest armor slot, that way you have to choose your equipment after what you intend to do. If you are exploring and mining you take the backpack so that you don't have to return to base as often to drop of your loot. And if you want to fight mobs you can't take with you as much non-combat equipment.
You shouldn't be able to do everything at the same time. Much in the same way as having unlimited storage takes away some of the fun of collecting items.
And what happens if you take the back pack off with items in it? the items spill out like chests? I'd hate to lose my stuff from over a cliff but, that could work too. I did think we need a variety of clothing for different things.

Better yet, we should have a feature that will let us pick up a whole building and haul it around. Then we could ask for the same for wolves: just strap a building to the sonuvabitch.
As if carrying around some thousand blocks wasn't unrealistic.
Also, I do not know if this has been suggested already.
And yes, this has already been suggested. That is why you use search.
In SMP i always think : I just dont want to leave this in a chest , some people will steal it! , if there was way to carry a lot more stuff...
And believe me , a lot of times they have stoled all of my chest.
I think this should be on 1.7

heres how i think you should craft the backpack, quite easy, and pretty basic
