Searched, saw nothing recent, but ropes in general have been suggested before. I try to be original with ideas anyways. Critisism welcome.
Ropes would be made by placing string in the 3x3 crafting table like this:
= 5 ropes
= String.
Now for the original part. You will be able to place ropes on any side of a block. (Except for sand and gravel. TNT will work differently with ropes.)
Ropes would appear to 'wrap around' the block it was placed on. (If you placed it on the top of a block, it would wrap around to the bottom of the block and back. If you placed it on the side of a block, it would wrap around to the other side and back. To get rid of the rope, you just have to punch it.) Once you place a rope on a block, you can then place another rope on that block and walk around. The rope would appear to be in your hand. (Ex: Hold a fishing rod, right click, and walk away. The rope would act like the fishing line does.) For every block you travel, one rope is taken from your inventory. You will run out of all ropes except for one: The one you have selected. This way, you can place that rope on a nearby block and connect the rope to that block, letting you walk away. (Or you could switch to another item.)
Above is a block without rope on it.
Above is a block with rope on it.
Above is a block with rope on it, as well as the player holding a rope which is connected to the block.
Above is same as previous, but after the player has walked a few blocks in one direction.
Above is two blocks with ropes on them attacted by ropes. This can be used in traps. If a player walkes over the rope, it will break. If the rope was attachted to TNT, the TNT will ignite. I'm sure other players will be able to think of clever traps with this. Liquids, minecarts, boats, mobs, sand and gravel will also break the rope. (Arrows will as well, if they hit the rope. I think that is unlikely though.)
Of course, this would be for more then just traps. Place a rope on a block, jump or fall off a cliff, and you will slowly fall untill you run out of ropes. You would be able to climb back up the ropes, but that would be about half as fast as climbing up ladders is. You can make temporary ladders, or ladders in the middle of a room withought having to make a pillar of blocks. Mobs would not be able to break a vertical rope by walking into it. They would climb up or down it like players would. Gravel, sand, liquids, arrows, minecarts and boats would still break the rope though.
Note that you cannot place a rope on a block if that block has two or more blocks beside it.

Well, ropes could have a lot of uses but it would require a lot of ideas that aren't in the game. Like for linking minecarts, herding animals, combining boats, or elevators. Right now all I see ropes being used for is decoration. The trap idea would be kind of cool but I still don't know.
i could say: "a vacuum could be used to make a million dollars". Well, thats nice, but to get me interested tell me how.
I did say that it could be used as a tripwire, or at least I meant to, with mobs being able to walk over it, break it, and it igniting TNT.
I forgot to say how it effects sand and gravel blocks though. If you place ropes on a sand/gravel and the block under the sand/gravel with the rope on it breaks/falls/etc, the sand/gravel with the rope attatched will swing untill it hits another block or a mob. If it hits a mob, the mob will be pushed over one block.
Rope is attatched to cobble.
The wood will burn, the sand will fall and hit the player, knocking him/her into the lava. Unless they jump and land on the sand. Then they can stand on it while it swings around the room, or untill it hits a wall.
If the sand/gravel hits nothing, it will swing back and forth untill it runs out of momentum. When it runs out of momentum, the rope can be climbed and the sand/gravel will no longer move north east west south or up. If the rope is broken, it can still fall down. (like swings in real life.)
If a rope is placed on the side of a sand/gravel block, and the other end is attatched to a block on the same layer as it, the sand/gravel will fall about half a block down and then stop because the rope would be preventing it from falling any further. If the rope is broken, the sand/gravel will continue to fall.

What do you dislike? Why do you dislike it?

The sand would fall down half a block.
