Hey! I was thinking that we needed a form of flight on Minecraft, and I brainstormed, selected, and advanced an idea: Vultures! Vultures would be a new animal in the Minecraft universe. You could ride and fly them!
- Vultures would need a Saddle to ride. Once on, right click to take off and go back down. Jumping off from the height of flight would result in death. I’m debating whether the flight path should be uncontrollable (like riding a pig) or not.
- Vultures would be indigenous to Desert Biomes. In other words, they would spawn in one and tend to stay near one.
- Because Vultures eat things that are already dead, if you die near a Vulture it would come over and “eat” all of your dropped items. You can recover these items by killing the Vulture that “ate” them.
- I’m not sure what Vultures should drop, besides your dropped items if any. Perhaps a Feather (because it’s a bird), a Raw Porkchop (as the meat from its last meal), or perhaps a completely new item, say a Talon or something, that could be used in later crafting.
I am a complete Minecraft newb, so feel free to comment or add on to any of the bullet points. I do really like this idea, and hope that it eventually becomes a Minecraft reality.
You do know how small vultures are in real life, right?
You do know that creepers don't exist in real life, right?
OP, that sounds like a cool idea. Yeah, they'd have to be fairly large to be ridden upon, but it could still work. I normally hate most of the animal and mob suggestions, but this one sounds good. The vulture described here has substance.
Also, I ****ing love that the vulture would "eat" your items after you die. That's hilarious, and would make for great pressure not to die in the desert.
You should tame it by throwing meat on the ground for it. After it eats a few porkchops, it'd follow you around, which is when you could put a saddle on it. I'd want to be able to tame the vulture first because I'd want him to be a total bro and chill out at my house when we're not flying together. Once you "tame" him, take him back to your place where he finds a perch or something. Throw some meat on the ground whenever you want to go flying with him.
Also, if vultures are unguidable, and I'd want them to be guidable, the player should make the vulture descend by throwing meat on the ground.
I see no reason for this not to be a mod, i dont think this would be a good default part of the game though, biome specific animals should mean there is one type for each biome

There should beat least one biome specific animal per biome... There should be more good animals in general.
Nicely done, unlike most mob suggestions. I say guide-able, but with a new item; Pork on a Hook. Basically, taek a fishing rod and stick a pork chop on it. Then you could guide it around.
Also, maybe they would tend to hang around Zombies, seeing as they're dead flesh.
