A few weeks ago, I had an idea for Minecraft to change the game in a few ways. It basically takes the idea of many mods and puts them together, in the vanilla game!
This idea has a lot of parts so, if you read the whole thing, kudos to you!
1) A more realistic terrain generator
This means the generator would generate huge oceans, mountains, etc. I think that having chunks generate in a 32x32x32 size and stack in every direction would be great! I got this idea from the Minecraft Revamped mod suggestion. The map would no longer be infinite though. The map would be spherical, meaning that if you want from the spawn around the map, you would eventually come back to the spawn. I think that you should be able to select a map size. Weather it be a small map, which would be about 1,000 KM's or so, up to a large one, which could be up to 10,000 KM's, or more!
2) More of a progression effect
Progressions is the idea that doing one thing will lead to another. Yes I know that Minecraft has a simple version of this, meaning you need to kill spiders for string to make a bow, making all future acts of killing spiders be easier. I think that there needs to be more progression! One thing I think would be cool is evolution over time, meaning that when you start the game, all you can do is mine simple blocks. First thing you can do is get wood, because thats all you CAN do. With basic wooden tools, you would need to gain strength in order to get stone tools. You work for weeks on end and finally you have the strength to mine stone! But, how do you craft this stone into a pick, sword, or any tool? You need to learn how to do so! To do this, you will need to migrate to find someone who knows how! This is the introduction of NPCs into the game. You finally find a miner, and he tough you how to make a stone pick! Now everything is easy! Or is it? Just because you have a stronger pick doesn't mean you can mine iron, or even coal yet! You need to still gain strength! So it is like a cycle, and with every new item that you can make a tool with, you need to learn how! This is just one example of millions of possible ideas!
3) NPCs
Some people like the idea of being completely alone in the Minecraft World, I, for one, don't. Lets say you're walking along and you see someone chopping some trees! You go to say "Hello". He may say hello, or get aggressive! Lets say he wants to talk. he then would show you his humble abode, or the village that he came from! You can then either become allies with said person (and maybe village), or just kill them and take there stuff. Some NPCs would be passive, other hostile. I know that this has been suggested many times!
4) More ways to travel
One thing would be more ores. With more ores you can make more stuff. Stuff like simple planes to fly across the realistically sized oceans I talked about earlier! These planes would need fuel though, and I don't think coal would cut it! Lets say you're mining and you encounter a black liquid... At first you think its ink, but its actually oil! Oil would be used to power planes, (VERY SIMPLE ONES, only small wooden bi-planes AT THE MOST ADVANCED) minecarts, etc. I was also thinking that boats would be a good thing to have! By boats I mean boats that can sustain you for your month long ride across realistic oceans. Maybe you can do stuff on the boat while it moves! You could farm, fish, all that stuff! And, you can make the boat larger to your needs, but eventually it would get to large and sink! Boasting may seem like all fun and games, peaceful, calm, etc. But, lets say you encounter a shark, or a giant squid! What do you do? You get the harpoon that you just crafted and "CHARGE!!!". You anchor down the ship and attack! Do you win, or lose? That is your choice!
5) More items
More ores, tree types, etc. Lets say you need to make an anvil to craft things like iron or tools! I also think that, don't hate for this, things should be a LOT more expensive! Maybe instead of a full set of iron armor costing 24 iron, it would cost 24 compressed iron bars! One compressed iron bar would cost 3 iron ingots! Meaning that it would cost a whopping 72 iron ingots to make armor! Thats just one idea. Maybe some rare droppings from rare monsters that are even stronger than the strongest of ores! Maybe certain items give you special ability's? Let you double jump, etc.
6) More monsters and animals
I think that day is too safe. Why not add a small monster that does a small amount of damage that spawn ONLY at day or in light areas? It would make Minecraft much more exiting and less of a game were if you survive one night, you're basically set for the whole game. Maybe every night, theres a chance that monsters will get a sudden urge of confidence and strength! You exit the mine, you see that your door is gone! The torched in your house are gone too! You enter your house, scared. You turn a corner and theres a creeper nest! You realise that your house is in trouble! You could either save your house and your possessions, or run.
Much More!
These are just some ideas of an infinite amount of things that could go into the game! If I think of something else thats relevant, i'll post it!
Also, if you think that I didn't post enough details, remember that this is just a basic idea post with a few examples!
First of all, no wishlist threads. Read the rules before doing ANYTHING here.
Opinions on the ideas:
1. Screw you. (Almost) infinite map is good enough. Keeps things fresh.
2. Rules.

4. Planes do not fit in the Minecraft theme. Not to mention that using oil for a small WOODEN plane is a pretty dumb idea, considering that everything will instantly combust. Notch did say something about fancier boats.
5. Progress not found. It's simple iron armor :angry.gif: The system we have now is good enough, just a few more special ores.
6. You cannot save posessions when you have a Creeper nest, and it completely screws up SMP servers.
1) Why say "Screw you" at my opinion? Also, the maps would still be randomly generated.
2 + 3) This isn't really a wishlist is it? Its just a very extensive and complex idea thread

5) I think that finding up to 3 or 4 stacks of iron and having enough iron for 10 iron sets is too easy.
6) The Creeper nest thing was just an example, just something to add danger to the game. I wasn't saying add it, just saying that I think something ALONG those lines, or rather a more natural mob spawner, would be a good idea.
I have a lot of criticism but I refuse to write it here. Make a post for each thing. This is not 1 general idea, this is tons of specific and very different ideas that seem to have very little in common.
On the overall theme of you topic (adventure/progression), I also want this in MC. But I think maybe the game will diverge into separate modes instead of just keeping on piling stuff together. We will learn more when we get 1.7.

IMO Kira's RPG thread can burn in the Nether, because all of that SHOULD be in adventure mode.
