Flags would be a purely decorative item, used to mark territory or just to put at the top of your big tower. The recipe would be pretty simple:
And the colored wool you use would make a 2x2 pattern on the flag itself. So if you used red wool for the top two pieces and white wool for the bottom two pieces, the resulting flag block would have red for the top half and white for the bottom half. This allows a lot of customization without needing to import images, and only uses a single recipe. Flags would probably not be stackable, since otherwise it might act weird because of different color varieties.
or you could have a loom to make a detailed flag then use a crafting bench to turn them into a proper flag?
though as a simple version why not have people be able to make a 3*3, 2*3 or 2*2 flag separate which can then be put up like a picture or added to 2 sticks to form a flag pole? would be very badass for decorating fortresses.

This would work if you could make colored yarn... not string.. no use for bows or fishing poles just good ol yarn.
Then you could use the crafting table to make a block that has a colored pattern by placing the different colored yarn.. it would have to store data much the way a map does since each block would be a unique color combo... you could then add these blocks to the flag for a custom picture or just place them as a wall for more complex designs.

This is a really intuitive idea. I think the simplistic crafting recipe is fine, since it allows for enough customization to do the things you would want to do with a flag, and enough variations for all the different kinds of markers you'd want. I really hope this makes it in
