Say, if you find wild grass, if it doesn't drop seeds, it drops dried grass, (or hay, I don't know). If you feed a cow, sheep, chicken, or pig with it, (2 or more, like taming a wolf), it will pop hearts above its head, (also like a wolf). Then, you can herd them and they won't despawn. Thus, you can have a farm for milk, porkchops, wool, and eggs/feathers.
If the idea needs work, it probably can wait to be posted lol. This has been said before, but I prefer a little more variety. Pigs like Mushrooms and they are farmable now so I'd say use that for pigs. Sheep and cow should use Wheat, as it is the closes to hay we have. Chickens should just use Seeds.
How will this be limited though? I wouldn't want to prevent hostile mobs from spawning by getting too many of these guys. Also, the chicken and cow are the only that would really NEED to be tamable as they are the only mobs you can get continuous resources from (Milk and Eggs).

Wool, milk, and eggs all would work, but what about pork and leather?
Some sort of breeding algorithm would be needed, here are my ideas.
Pig means any animal, it's just easier to write out.
-tame pigs (maybe max tame-able to 4-6. I'm not sure what the mob limit is, so lower would probably be better)
-have at least two in same chunk
-up to three pigs will spawn in as small an area as possible around tamed pigs, after this maybe one/both tamed pigs must be exchanged, as they will no longer count towards 'at least two in chunk' having had their 'seed' used up. Crude/disgusted/prevents even more ridiculously over powered mob grinders
This allows fairly slow growth in population. Tests would be needed to find optimal tame-able and spawn-able numbers.
Also for cows it could be changed so you needed to tame them to get milk. Milk isn't that useful anyway, so I don't think this would make a big deal in the game. Until milk is made to work like water. Which would be awesome.
EDIT: I like Badprenup's idea of mushrooms/seeds
Also, maybe there could be a passive mob limit and a neutral/aggressive limit? or three different ones? Or tamed animals could be made separate, or aggressives trying to spawn in darkness but with line of sight to sky (surface at night) cause despawn of non-tamed animals?
Snipped

Lol Milk fountains.
I really don't want to see breeding implemented myself. It seems unneeded as chances are you will run into a few flocks of sheep, 20 or so pigs, a dozen cows, and a chicken or two every day cycle anyways.

True, as the game is now. But while suggesting changes, why not also suggest the changes needed to make it work? Like, smaller groups of randomly spawning mobs?
Not that I want that, but it would make the rest of this idea work better.
Love your idea!
but you need to do stuff like this:
1. each animal love different type of food
2. you cant take animal "things" too many times, like you can take sheeps wool every 3 (in-game) days

Exactly. It will be like mushrooms. Cows can be milked, eh, once a day. Sheep, they have to grow wool back, so 3 days, and well, the pigs die. Chickens should take 4 days to lay an egg because they could hatch already tamed chickens.
