Like on normal train-tracks, you could have switches to switch minecarts from rail to rail. I have a large storage depot on my mainworld that connects to all my mining and lumber camps. This is so useful because when I expand it, I won't need as many storage carts because I can change their destination almost automatically. Of course, these switches would be powered by redstone pressure plates, switches, etc. (even the new minecart pressure plate) to switch from on to off.
As stated we already can do that, a T section of track changes its orientation when powered.
however this method is clumsy and random. A proper track switching mechanism would be a great benefit.

Bleh.. Sounds like a good idea.
Just wire redstone from these things to a section where you have placed to opposing track options... it works just fine now.

Don't fear the creeper, yeah he's in your mine
Don't fear the creeper, happens all the time, don't fear the creeper

try a large square loop, enter track, stop, select path (via lever) this straightens all connectors except the one you want.. the bigger the loop the more exits you can put on, and for returns? link it into all the same entrance track
fyi: looots of redstone

How? With doors?

The more redstone, the better. Creepers will stand out more.
