Well, I've been playing in a multiplyer server for quite a long time now, and there's one thing that seems to truly annoy people: the look of their armor.
Even though they fit minecraft's style perfectly, the square-shaped blue thing we call a diamond cuirass isn't nearly as imposing or cool as it could be. Besides of their odd shapes, armor pieces ruin any attempt to create an original look, as they are the same for everyone and too big to use with skins. Because of that, many players choose not to wear armor, choosing their custom, personal skins instead.
Minecraft is all about freedom, so players shouldn't have to choose between protection and style.
With that in mind, I present the following suggestion: armor customization.
In order to customize an armor piece, the player would craft it with other elements to generate the effect he was looking for.
There are several ways to implement this: (WARNING: AWFUL PAINT EDITING AHEAD)
Hat remodeling: Combine an armor helm with some items to generate other kinds of hats:
This would include sombreros, pimp hats, spartan hats and engineer helmets.
Chestplate accessories: Combine a chestplate with other items to create medieval-like armor, with shoulders or capes.
Transparent armor: So we can show our skins to the world.
The idea isn't to upgrade the items: the customized pieces wouldn't have any kind of stat change. Still, there is this possibility:
These items, besides of being great fun, could become an indicator of your "role" in minecraft: a fighter would use a cape, a miner would use a miner's light and the redstone engineers would use sci-fi goggles.
Some questions that may show up:
Mr Smartypants:
Hell, why don't you just use a texture pack!?
Well, for several reasons:
Regardless of the texture pack I use, i still wouldn't see one's skin if it happens to wear armor.
These would be nice additions for everyone to play with. See how hats became an important part of Team Fortress Two, for example.
