You may be aware that Minecraft in no way makes ZERO MATHEMATICAL SENSE.
It wouldn't be that fun if it did.
This is one of the exceptions.
Currently, the recipe uses 6 cobble/wood blocks to make 4 stair-blocks.
The stair block is almost exactly 3/4 the volume of a full block, by appearance.
By some quick multiplication:
3/4 x 4 = 3
Steve, the skilled crafter he is, manages to waste HALF OF HIS MATERIAL.
The madness doesn't stop there, no.
It's the same thing with half-blocks.
Following similar logic:
1/2 x 3 = 1 1/2 or 1.5
Again, Steve here must be able to cut his blocks better.
I realize now that the suggestion for 1/8 blocks is truly amazing, and would solve this problem.
The thing is, this is quicker to implement, the simple change of a few values.
It is necessary that the recipes be increased.
I understand it is normal for excess material to be wasted when carving/cutting.
I guess it could be said he uses his bare hands, and is inaccurate, but there are tools on the workbench.
While the recipe could be doubled, for an exact return, it might be O.K for some material to be lost, for balance.
I say that both recipes might instead produce 5 of each object.
There is another option to alter the recipe of stair-blocks, using 3 blocks to form a corner-shape, but this is a hair harder to re-code, and Notch and the team would be less likely to accept. From what little I know about Java (nothing), I believe it would be a lot simpler to just change a few values.
I am again aware that 1/8 blocks solve all of these problems, but this would be a good temporary placeholder solution,
that hasn't been suggested before. I searched google, and the site search bar.
If someone believes that it has indeed been suggested, let me know, and I'm also open to any criticism of other kinds.
Something else I am aware of, that the recipe for stairs and half-blocks are very old, and concerns about the recipe may have come up, with different ideas.
But the "cost" of 6 blocks really isnt that bad. Its supposed to be there to discourage too much half steps or stairs. Not that there would be, im just saying what would you do with extra half blocks and stairs?
