Flint and steel. Oh, flint and steel, how you require simple, yet somewhat costly materials, and how you are the perfect tool of the griefer. You are so useful, but I wish there was an easier, cheaper alternative.
Enter: The Match
Possibly crafted like a torch, but with charcoal in the place of coal, the match would be a single-use alternative to flint and steel. In order to activate it, you need to strike it. This basically involves hitting stone, cobblestone or sandstone with it just once. It would then be lit. You would have about fifteen seconds to light something with it before it went out.
Simple enough.
Torches. There's nothing really wrong with you, but you don't exactly... Well, you aren't so portable. I think some people would like to carry something like you around for a while, have it light the way. Now, now, don't get all fussy, torch. Your function would still be intact.
Enter: The Flare.
I would suggest crafting this by placing a piece of flint over some redstone dust, with paper to its right and left. The flint would serve as the ignition surface and the redstone dust would burn. It would have a soft, red glow, like a redstone torch. You could carry it with you, and it would burn for 45 seconds.
Thoughts?

I don't know sled teams but I do know I put my dog on an electric treadmill once and dangled a chicken leg. Treadmill puppy ensued.
Which is funny, because that's essentially what you did right there.
Bumping for the sake of bumping is different than contributing (even saying not to bump posts is enough of a contribution). To make this post not just a bump as well, I like both of the ideas. Can we place flares and just have them be like really bright (but one time 45 second use) torches too?

Saying "Don't." isn't contributing, and can we please stay on topic, here?

Flint and steel are not costly. I have about 30 blocks of iron and 5 stacks of iron in a chest somewhere and don't say flint is expensive. This idea seems fairly useless to have and serves no really purpose.

Off Topic: Reminding people of the rules is always allowed, even if it isn't contributing to the topic. He told you not to bump. He could have said, "Please don't bump your own topic without contributing as it is against the rules." But he didn't.
On Topic: I said I liked the ideas. Any feedback on placing flares as brighter torches that burn out after the 45 seconds? Or hell could we throw them? I would love to toss a lit flare into one of the pits of death you sometimes see.
