I think that deserts are rather lacking of features right now, and although I know that they are meant to be barren, adding randomly generated oases with palm trees wouldn't hurt. An oasis would be a rather rare find, and its size would range roughly anywhere from a 10x10 to a 25x25 area. The oasis would not be a perfectly rectangular area, but rather a more round Minecraft lake-shaped area with many irregularities. The size of the oasis itself would be defined by where the lush green grass ends and sand begins, but the oasis would still have small patches of sand within its boundaries. At the center of an oasis would be a pond roughly proportional with the area of the oasis. It would have lots of resources not found in deserts such as water, sugar cane, soil, and palm trees. A palm tree would be just like any other tree in that it would yield logs that could be converted into charcoal or wooden planks. However, instead of saplings, there would be 3-5 coconuts at the top of the tree next to the leaves that could be crafted into tools and food. Thus, you could not grow palm trees yourself, making coconuts a rare resource. Palm trees would also have a small chance of spawning on beaches near tropical biomes. On a side note, maybe the soil in an oasis would always be fertile so that one could immediately plant seeds to grow wheat on it. I don't know if that is feasible or a good idea at all, but I feel it's worth mentioning.
I haven't seen a thread mainly addressing this, so I had to share my ideas. Thanks for reading, and please leave feedback.

Survival Islands Challenge: Four islands and a vast ocean... can YOU survive?
Oases would be nice but I think biomes would need to be bigger for them to be possible. Mirages are probably not possible. Palm tree would be kind of a coll idea.
You know the swirly view when you are using a Nether Portal? Same thing applies to the Mirages. Just mess up the view of the player when standing too long in the desert.

not exactly what a mirage is, but it is a pretty good idea

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.

Not really. It just seems like an unnecessary and annoying visual effect that happens just because you were outside for too long. What if you were building something big like a statue or a castle in the desert? It just seems very unnecessary and I don't see why anyone would want it.

GENERATION 21: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment
I think it's a great idea. But it would need a firm set of rules. For example, since there is no hydration factor in the game, one would have to be coded in at a later date, or to do it with the current format, a mirage would only appear when the hunger bar was gone and you were desprite for food, and rather showing you an island or a source of water (a proper mirage) it would show you a pig or a chest or a town in the distance with crops. Then once you reach it it would just either disappear or fall apart into various pixels.

Oases are already existent.
Palm trees could be cool, just put them on beaches too.
That way, people that spawn in deserts can get the necessary materials.
