I had a thought that occured to me while pondering Minecraft earlier today. Perhaps something that could be added to the game would be Oysters - but not in the form that a quick search seems to be suggested before. Instead, I'm thinking something more like in the style of Mushrooms - not a block, but rather a "plant" (for want of a better term) that would slowly spread, and upon 'harvesting' would have a low (5%? 10%?) chance of dropping a Pearl.
Alternatively, Oysters could come as blocks ('Oyster Bed'?) that could be broken like any other block, and re-placed, but if re-placed outside of water would slowly(?) convert to cobblestone(?) as the oysters died, and if placed into a Furnace could be 'refined' into a Pearl (i.e. from the oysters opening under the heat). But if placed in water, the block would remain as Oysters. If there would be a way to have compatible (stone/cobblestone?) blocks touching an underwater Oyster block slowly become Oyster blocks themselves (like how grass spreads, but slower?), that could allow for pearl farming...
You can find oysters in water.
They are rendered like mushrooms (2D sprites crossed) with an oyster sprite
Over time, they will grow pearls and change sprite.
When harvested, they will give the oyster and the pearl if it has grown
Cannot be placed outside of water (would be hard to render being in/out of water, this is the same reason why doors/signs/ladders block water)
Sand must be within a 4-block radius of the clam for it to grow a pearl, because clams only produce pearls if sand gets into them. This will be rendered much like how wheat can only be grown within a 4-block radius of water.
The pearls would probably be as useful as sugarcane, maybe a bit more.
One possible use could be enchanting? I don't like that one, maybe you guys could think of better uses.
