There are a few post talking about fog/mist but they are limited to a natural phenomena. What about giving a minecraft twist? What I am proposing here is to create an event (like weather) reusing the cloud code creating a Mist. The mist would appear rarely having several special effects.
Basic Mist Attributes:
1 - Block out the sun allowing mobs to spawn in it.
2 - About 20-30 blocks over and under sea level looking like a
3 - Place a black and white filter on the screen (cant see color of things causing troubles finding out what they are).
4 - Vision limited to 5-7 cubes away.
5 - Moves slower than clouds and bigger than clouds.
6 - Keep Cloud attribute to go through matter (paranormal)
Special Attributes:
1 - Special mobs spawn in it (let's call them shades for now)
2 - Compass needles spins.
3 - Maps shows a pointer jumping everywhere, no pointer or blank map.
Shades attributes:
1 - Transparent body with glowing eyes
2 - Emits sound like whispers of an unknown language.
3 - Could behave like . When hit they bounce back about 5-7 cubes away out of sight in a random direction (higher chance of jumping behind you).
4 - The eyes brightness is directly proportional to the distance they are from you. the eyes being the only part of the body visible.
5 - When hit shades screams increasing the chance of an other shade spawning close.
Story/Situation:
- You are walking and see the mist coming and asking your self "that's odd... a cloud that low?".
- Then you enter it "wtf cant see **** in here"
- Shade spawns close and start hearing voices/whispers "the F is that?"
- Start to see a pair eyes closing in "the f is this?"
- Shade get too close and you get hit then start defending your self to have the thing disappear. O_o
- You hear the voices from behind you, turn and you hit an other time ending having the eyes disappear again.>_<
- Start hearing more voices (other shade spawned) O_O
- Now 2 pairs of eyes are closing in.(which one did i hit first?)
- As you land hits, you keep looking around moving back and forth. You dont know where you are anymore.
- Look at your compass and the needle spins
- Look at your map and you have no idea where you are.
- 2-3 shades are on you now. "OMG OMG OMG"
- Only option is to go underground deep/high enough to get out of the fog.
Additional Ideas/alternative:
1 - The mist is an area where the barrier between 2 dimension is weaker. Hell mobs or sky dimension mobs could spawn in them. Artifacts could be left behind like a column of hell material.
2 - The mist could interfere with portals, switching the color and leading to an other dimension. The gate would be only leading to the other dimension until the fog goes away. EX: You enter the portal and don't come back trough it in time before the mist get past it ending up you being stranded in an other dimension forced to either wait of build an other portal. If the game does not hold data from other dimension at the same time there could be a timeout of what... about 5-10min.
3 - Mist Spawns far away from portals with a trajectory making them go over it.
5 - When hit shades screams increasing the chance of an other shade spawning close.
So basically, if you hit it, it becomes even more difficult and spawns more of itself? It sounds like you could have a potential of hundreds of these things, and you can't kill them.
Well , i think this will be too difficult to handle...
I think it should be added when notch adds the Hardcore...
Becuase... all that about the shades and the compass spining... that will be so hard to handle.
Also , Nether mob in the Mist? WTF! , The idea was good until i saw all those things about mobs , no one will survive in a sight of 5 - 7 blocks with Ghast and Weird shadows spawning.
I think the only mob there will be the Shadow , a lot of shadows will spawn , but they will have only a heart , because only the mist will make the game to hard , if we have some monster with like 10 hearts , it will be stupidly annoying.
The mist should only be like 1 - 2 minutes.
Ghast spawning there is stupid...
I like the mist idea , but not the ideas about all those mobs appearing... Probably in Hardcore... but not even in hard...

- They should withstand about 2-3 hits max with a steel sword, 1 hit with diamond. The purpose is to force players to be disoriented.
- Non aggressive Ghast since (lost/cant see you?) with wandering pigman.
- "Increased" chance of spawn not 100%
- Hell mobs spawn was an alternative the main idea was for shades only in the mist.
This sounds like something that could fit Hardcore mode ...
Anyway, an interresting idea. It sounds very frustrating to suddenly walk into a mist, completly without sense of orientating and random shadows to fight against ... I like it!

Is this awesome or what!?
How long does the fog last? I don't want to be underground for a Minecraft day sitting there, waiting for fog to disappear.
