At first I was thinking it would be neat to have a mod to change the crafting style of Minecraft to the style used in Terraria. Terraria presents you with a list of items you can make based on the resources you have, and then all you have to do is click what you want made and it's done. That's all well and good, but it feels less to me like crafting and more like buying with resources. I actually enjoy the draw-to-craft style of Minecraft, it feels more like I'm doing something to produce the items...that I'm "crafting" them.
The basic Minecraft style however seems a bit limited to me; when you "draw" something to craft it you can only have one possible outcome. Thus two similar items (ex. wood half blocks and trap doors) which could logically be drawn in the same way must have their draw-craft altered.
I think it might be interesting to see the styles combined. The draw-craft style would stay the same, however when you place those three wood planks you would be presented with the option to make either the half block or the trap door. It's a pretty simple idea (in concept) that I believe could be used to vastly expand the options for craft-able items.
...when the time comes, and IF it comes, that there are more craftables than logical recipes for them - this would be the best solution. However, we're a long way away from that being at all necessary.
I'd like to think that Minecraft will be around for quite some time, and I do believe that time will come when there are 'more craftables than more logical recipes for them'. However I think that if the change was made sooner than later it would save a lot of confusion in the future, and allow for a lot more cosmetic blocks to be made (Chairs, tables, windows, etc.) without having to arbitrarily add to the amount of required resources to make an item. (Ex. one row of wood planks could make a single trap door, instead of two rows creating two.)

Chairs and tables? There's a mod for that for now. Windows? There's glass for that for now.
When the time comes, sure. But it's unnecessary now.

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?
There isn't really a need for this, although simpler, it'll leave the realisticness of Minecraft a little less realistic...
Putting aside that I don't think realism is something to shoot for in a game of 16 bit graphics and block building, the current draw-crafting isn't exactly "realistic". They're neat, and I have fun making things, however I can see that the idea I presented would make the recipes feel less "unique".
Considering the amount of new items, cosmetic and practical, that could and likely will be added to the game I think it would be wise to implement this sooner than later. It would allow for categories of certain types of items to be made and overall make the crafting system that much more uniform to avoid confusion later on.
That seems sort of making the game too easy. Zombie coming? Just place a crafting bench down and click on the sword icon! It would just be too convenient and wouldn't make sense to just smash all the resources together to make something.
Plus Minecraft =/= Terraria
No, if you read the idea I posted, you would see that it would still require you to 'draw' the sword before being able to click the sword icon to craft it. (Also: Why wouldn't you have a sword to begin with?)

There is nothing wrong with the current crafting system. Don't try to fix something that isn't broken.

I would take you more seriously if you actually read the OP (the WHOLE post).
OT: I like the idea. It will also save Notch from having to try to fit in items by having drawings that are even less like the item you create.
Best idea ever if you need any help with anything just PM me
Okay, my first post in this thread was when I was a little misinformed, but this is obviously a feature that is not vital to Minecraft's gameplay.
