I'm not sure if this is the right area for this topic... I need suggestions.
I have an idea for a project I want to work on. I'm just not sure it is even possible. I want to create a giant satellite dish that is hidden with water. The idea would be to press a switch and be able to fill/drain the pond to hide/reveal the giant dish. Basically its the place in the GoldenEye James Bond movie.
I've been trying to figure out how you'd be able to fill such a large area with just a switch...
Is it possible to fill such a large area at all without manually having to add a water block to each top layer to create it? In other words, can I just fill it with a waterfall type block, or will it just fill the bottom block or two?
In Minecraft you build stuff out of natural materials BY YOURSELF! If you can build an underwater "death ray", by yourself in reality my only doing tasks possible in Minecraft, THEN I will like this idea.
You can add a room with water source blocks being held up by trap doors and a switch would open all these doors and flood then unflood the room ( I'm not positive if water goes though open trap doors though)

Thanks for an actually constructive reply. The hatches unfortunately don't allow water through. I've already tried playing with that.
@MohawkNinja - The death ray is obviously not going to work. That wasn't the question. Similiar to giant pixel art of Link or Cactar (or whatever art people are making these days) the satellite is more of an "art piece" for flavor to go with the rest of the building...
My main concern is, when I make a man-made pond I have to put a block of water on the top layer block to fill it. Is it possible to do with moving water blocks, or will it only ever settle on just the bottom block layer.

Possibly as a painting, but it's too modern as a block itself.
