Hey guys I was trying to think of a way to rig up an intruder alert that was more likely to trigger when enemies were closer in, and I thought of a new circuit component that might make it easier.
A probability switch, something like a redstone repeater, that has a chance to pass on a charge based on the position of the switch. For example, a switch with five positions:
1- 5% chance to transmit charge
2- 25% chance to transmit charge
3- 50% chance to transmit charge
4- 75% chance to transmit charge
5- 95% chance to transmit charge
then you could run them in series to fine tune it even further. My idea for an intruder alert was a system of pressure plates that are hooked to redstone and the prob. switches. The farther out the system of plates runs, the less chance it has to transmit the charge, so that npcs and players further away from home base dont set off the alarm as often as those right at my front door.
Let me know what you guys think, I have no idea how hard it would be to implement, or if you can achieve something similar with the current circuits.
This could be combined with clocks for a repeating random generator. I can't think of any uses right now, but it's a random generator... there HAS to be uses in minecraft.
Why would you want this? I'm not knocking the idea, I just genuinely can't think of a good application - if it was for mob detection why would I not want 100% detection?
If I want to rig a fairly lengthy detection system I don't want it to go off every time a chicken walks through some distant part of my compound. But if I'm just hanging out in my house bored and want to go investigate something, it would be nice to have something that can show me which way mobs might be. Or if you're playing PvP and want to have a better idea of how far an enemy raid might have made into your territory.

So far, all I can think of is a bunch of meta-devices; make some kind of slot machine, perhaps, or lottery device. I can't really think of anything practical, but... Who cares about practicality? It's Minecraft.
I like the idea, but I'd also want this accompanied by various other new redstone and redstone-activated devices, like... Oh, I don't know... A "changing" sign. In any case, more inputs and more outputs.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.
You can already make things like that though, without any specialised items. We have a magic 8-ball on our server with 16 different outputs, one of which is selected at random when you step on a pressure plate.
Sure, this would make it EASIER to make such things, but it's already a pretty niche avenue to be catering for, and there are way more interesting and practical suggestions for expanding redstone.
You say you aren't knocking my idea but everytime someone suggests a use for it you claim that it can be done (although with more difficulty) with the existing components. Everyone else is saying they like the idea, and it was my impression this wasn't the forum for saying that minecraft is perfect the way it is. And talking about what you have on your server isn't really offering constructive criticism.

It is constructive, because he is EXPLAINING why this idea is slightly redundant.
Well, I've said something can be done with existing components ONCE. I'm not saying Minecraft's perfect - far from it - there are lots of redstone suggestions I'd like to see added, but I'm not about to champion every single new one just because you've suggested it, if I'm not 100% convinced by it yet. I'm not knocking the idea because I'm intrigued by it, and I'd love to hear some practical applications for it, but so far the applications suggested are already well-served. Mentioning the build on my server was only to highlight this.
I don't HAVE any constructive criticism - as an item what you've described seems sound - other than it doesn't seem very USEFUL. If anything, constructive discussion should come from people proving me wrong. So far they haven't, but I'd love them to, honestly.
EDIT: and thanks, mohawk.
I'm not asking you to champion it, and if you aren't convinced yet why don't you sit back and let others discuss it before weighing in?

Hey... if you don't want people to talk about their view about your ideas, then your in the wrong forum.
