I don't exactly think all these ideas your adding are going with the theme of the Map Item
I think Honeydew from the yogcast described the map very well,
it's pretty much, you drawing what is around you, I don't think there needs to be any dinamic map lighting and what not, since that isn't exactly what you drew,
The 2 Options that I like the best are Drawing on Maps and being able to place them, so others can see them
Another idea, which fits well with the map "theme" (IMO) is being able to copy a map from another map, so both have the same locations in them, maybe crafting 2 Maps with an Ink Sac (Maybe Possible in the 2x2 Grid?)
And then being able to send Arrows with Maps in them (A Map Arrow) and when it hits the ground, it breaks and you get a map (or something like that)
that would actually be cool if you combo it with the marker idea. This way you could map out a large area, place them all on walls, so you have one very large area covered with the maps, and you can mark it as you please. It would be cool making a very large wall filled with the different maps of your surrounding area, and if it's smp, you can take down some maps, scout around, and update the maps.
My idea would to be able to combine a map with something, im not sure what though, so that you can clone a map (when you craft it with the existing map, it makes 2 maps) and when one map updates, so does the other.

For the dynamic map thing, I chose redstone as the material since redstone is a magical item. It would make sense for it to be updating as it is sort of like a moving map.

Tectoanalysis Maps:
The first thing to do is craft a Tectoguage: = 1 Tectoguage
(:Portabella: = Compass)
The tectogauge is then crafted like with paper like a map.
Opening the map at the entrance to the mine will scan downward from the player's Y position and map any air. The lighter the pixel, the closer to the surface the air is.

Search. It was everyone else's idea first, and it sucked every time.
As others have said, two definitely needed things are mapping tools for caves, and the ability to make marks on the map.
One thing I would like changed, is how the map is viewed. Since the map has to be out for it to be mapping while you walk, I feel like it takes up way too much space on the button of your screen, and it doesn't allow you to look downward to see if the next block you are jumping off of is a cliff. I would much rather have the map just look like a piece of paper carried in your hand, and instead of using the mouse and pointing down to view the map, you just right click and the map will view. To me this seems like a much better system when I'm out running around trying to fill in the map, so I don't have it obscuring so much of my vision.
I do agree that it would be cool with a cave map but since the map is a 2D pic and caves go up and down there isnt any easy wat of making one. But the way that you carry it is a really cool thing an dif you want to look down just cange tool so u donw hold the map in your hands. You dont always have to have a map in your hand while walking around. :smile.gif:
That's why you switch from your map to something else in your hotbar. When the map is equipped you use it, and the best part is, is that you don't need to have it equipped to update it.
Placing maps: YES
- When maps are placed next to eachother, they should visually merge to a single map without borders. This way a massive map room can be made.
- When placed, in any direction, it should be possible to walk over them as if they were solid ground.
The first one is already on the list, and the second one does sound pretty sweet. (We reall should have paintings the same way)
Looks good, though I don't like the types of maps idea. It makes it way too complex. I myself have an idea for maps, and I didn't notice it yet up there so here it goes.
Map Merging:
When Players have up to/more than 9 maps, players can merge them into 1 map by crafting them in a full 3x3 or 2x2 grid (havn't decided which is best yet). The merged map will then decideon what the central point on that new map will be, by comparing it with other maps, and place that map or area as the central point on that map. All the data will be filled on the map, that doesn't exceed the distance of what you see in the map, so basically if you craft a merged map with two maps showing areas being completely far away from eachother, the one furthest away from the central point and is not adjacent to any other maps will be lost. Any maps sharing similar data aqquired from mapping will be overwritten andmerged together. A crafted merged map will appear just like a regular map, but the lands that appear on the map will be compressed. There would be a hard limit too on how many times you can merge a specific map, so that you can't merge the same map as much as you want.

This is getting weird. People are now posting ideas that were even posted on this thread. Before you post an idea in this thread, take time to read the already suggested ones.
My two cents: On the top right corner of the map, have a compass rose. Gives a little extra feel to it, and since the primary reason of a compass rose is so that you can hold the map properly, make it so that you can rotate it. Maybe right-clicking will rotate it clockwise?

I think right clicking it should place the map. This is because I feel maps should be placable on walls.

Maybe the player could automatically rotate the map when you turn. It already lowers the map when you look up and raises it when you look down.

Considering that the recipe involves a compass this is very logical (and useful).
What is this doing off of the first page? I may not have any map suggestions to go 'butin', but I do see the need for a map megathread. I'll just go and page 1 this.
