The concept is pretty basic. Show some sort of material you want to a tamed wolf this might need an extra action button i don't know for sure.
Then the wolf will continue wandering around you and if it comes withing some predetermined number of blocks of whatever raw material you are looking for (ore, wood, animals, enemies) it will gravitate towards whatever it is that your getting it to sniff out and will give some sort of indication that it found it (or attack animals, or enemies if it is sniffing them out). Oh and another idea it could howl or something if a creeper is nearby to warn you XD that would be so helpful. What do you guys think??
I like it, but it might be a bit to much if the wolf can find any materials. I think that the ability to track organic materials would be enough. Having a pack of diamond sniffing wolfs might be a bit too overpowered.
I also agree with the watch dog suggestion. Having wolves help keep an area clear of unwanted mobs would be great.
Random idea had while typing: Maybe zombies could drop a one-use item (with a reasonably rare chance) that enables "scent tracking" of hostile creatures in a given radius of the wolf when right-clicking a wolf with said item. Duration of the effect would need a fairly strict limit. 5 minutes of realtime, maybe.

Exactly what I was thinking. No animal can be trained to smell for diamond hundreds of feet below the surface.

Pigs and truffles anyone? :wink.gif:
But yes, diamonds have no scent and should thus not be trackable. But speaking of truffles; maybe pigs could be used to find mushrooms? It's always hard to find the right sort of mushrooms when you need them and pigs can be found all over the place.
I don't think it would unreasonable to use right click to tell a tamed dog to look for a particular block that you're holding, provided that all it does is notify you if you're already within a certain distance of that specific block. It shouldn't just lead you straight there. All it would need to do is stand in place and always "point" towards the block it is looking for once in range.
[Sarcasm]and i can totally make a pickaxe out of 3 diamonds and some sticks[/sarcasm]
Let's face it. Diamonds do not have all the same properties as their real life namesakes. Claiming that minecraft diamonds DO have a scent that can be recognized by minecraft wolves isn't THAT much of a stretch.

Anything else, stupid.
