Would you play a version of Minecraft more focussed on story than survival? A game mode where you actually have a name, interact with NPCs, go on quests, and try to find a way out of this crazy land full of zombies and creepers?
I find the concept interesting. I think it would be best to include all the usual features of Survival mode, except Peaceful difficulty, but just add pre-loaded NPC towns, villages, ruins, castles, mines, and dungeons. Along with the NPCs you get a sort of Minecraftian mythology. Where did creepers come from? What is the Nether exactly? I think a Story Mode could really add a lot to this already awesome game.
I kind of like where you're coming from, but I think it's more fun to make this stuff up on our own instead of having a set, official mythology to it all. As for going on quests and having NPCs, I guess that could be cool if you're into that, but I don't think I'd ever play it. I like just letting my imagination wander when I wonder what the Nether is, not worrying about my theories being "wrong" or "cannon" or what have you. I also think that playing a game where you set all your own goals is a huge part of Minecraft's charm. You can literally do whatever you want, always. You are the game master, and it is great.
Also, this post here seems to address it pretty thoroughly.
What do I think? I think you should search. Not only is this suggested a LOT, but there is already an adventure mode planned that should have at least some of this. No telling when it will be out though.

I don't want to replace Survival mode, I love playing that too much. I know what you mean, freedom is fun, but a lot of the fanbase is into things with an official story.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I was on the forums.
You and your fiancée are on a dream vacation. Then, on a cloudy day, a fireball (Ghast?) comes out of nowhere and scores a direct hit on your ship, sinking it and separating you and your fiancée. You wake up on what would be your spawn location, and you then do what you want from there. Along the way, you will come across abandoned houses with nothing but a note detailing an aspect of Minecraft, like redstone and minecarts. However one note which activates after you obtain a Diamond Pickaxe will yeild information about a recent event:
I was panicked today. A black portal appeared out of nowhere and strange men came out. They were half-dead, looked like pigs and held gold weapons. They ravaged a nearby town and took everything, even the buildings! I took note that they also dragged an attractive woman - (name of fiancée) I think it was - through the portal. Before the portal closed, I found it was made of Obsidian, and lighting it on fire activates it. To those who read this: Avenge them.
This note tells you about the Nether, and is the supposed place where your fiancée is. This adds purpose for the Nether: a final destination to rescue your girlfriend. CLASSIC! Perhaps you can come across a Nether Dungeon to fight through as well!

I don't think I'd play a story mode. Minecraft is more about the proverbial "it's not about winning the game, it's about how you play the game" sorta thing. In a way, Minecraft IS sort of an RPG. You've got "Steve". There's your role, in offline, anyway. You acquire equipment and use it to acquire better versions of your ecquipment. There's your level-up. Adding new rooms to your buildiings is also kinda like leveling them up, only instead of having a set ammount of points to get a, let's say, pool, that looks like any other pool in the game and can not be made smaller to consume less resources, you can build a pool that looks how YOU want and uses the ammount of resources, types of resources and size that YOU want. It's kinda like playing a realistic RPG of an architect.

I didn't even use the word RPG. That's not what I meant at all.

RPG- A role playing game. You play the role of a character. Most games driven by story could technically be described as an "RPG".
