So i was actually going to suggest adding lightning to the game, and then found out by searching it was already there! (sorry guys... ima a newbie). Upon further looking i noticed several complaints from frusterated players who hate it when lightning destroys their stuff. So my suggestion is that upon using three iron ingots (or a more valuable mineral perhaps) in a vertical line on the craft table one could produce a lightning rod. Of course if introduced into the game it would have to have some criteria like:
1. Lightning rod must go on the highest point of whatever the player is wanting protected for it to work.
2. It should have a certain coverage area like torches but probably bigger.
3. Perhaps it might only work 75% of the time or something like that if the creators feel it would make the game too safe..
This also benefits the players that don't like venturing underground much as the lightning rod could be used to harness electricty and could be an alternative to using red stone.
Who knows what could happen if you put two rods together? You could start an ongoning current that would give you some ball of energy (like you see at those science museums) and use it for traps or just go all mad scientist on people!
Although lightning isn't the most dangerous thing or as common as other minecraft dangers, a constant theme of MC is starting with nothing and eventually becoming more advanced as time goes on. I think the lightning rod would make a good contribution to the game.

"If lightning manages to strike a portal frame, it will activate the portal." Stargate anyone? -Miner Kidd
Sorry man but this has been suggested before multiple times; I at least give you credit for developing you idea, that's something you don't see by a lot of newbies

Actually I believe there is a mod out there that is exactly how you depicted it :tongue.gif: Go search for it in the "Released Mods" Section :tongue.gif:
